Overview
What geotextile separation fabric is
A geotextile is an engineered textile made for use in the ground. It is supplied in rolls, unrolled over a prepared formation and lapped, and it is meant to let water through it. Its job is to keep two materials apart while doing so: a soft subgrade and the granular layer placed on it, a drainage stone and the soil around it, a bedding layer and the coarser material below it.
Two broad families are met, distinguished by how the fabric is made. A woven geotextile is made from flat tapes or yarns in a regular weave: it is strong in tension along its two directions, it has regular openings, and it has little thickness. A non-woven is a mat of randomly laid fibres bonded by needling or by heat: it is thicker, compressible, and it drains within its own thickness as well as through it. The non-woven form is published separately in this library because its loft, its cushioning behaviour and the way it filters give it a different set of subjects, and the two are not interchangeable simply because both are geotextiles.
What makes the family unlike everything else in this category is that every other membrane published here resists water. A geotextile is chosen for what it lets through. Its question is not whether it is unpunctured and continuous but whether its openings are matched to the soil it is filtering: too open and fines pass through it and silt the drainage it was protecting, too closed — or clogged by fines migrating into it — and water stops passing and pressure builds behind it. Matching a fabric to a soil is a geotechnical judgement made for the actual ground on the actual site.
It is also a layer that disappears. Once the material above it is placed, the fabric cannot be seen, inspected, cleaned or replaced without excavating everything laid over it, and the way it fails is gradual and silent. What eventually shows is a surface that has stopped draining, years after the laps were made.

- Moisture behaviour
- It is chosen for what passes through it rather than for what it stops. Whether it goes on passing water depends on the soil around it and on whether fines are migrating into the fabric.
- Substrate dependency
- The formation beneath decides most of the outcome: how fine it is, how wet, how even, and whether anything sharp was left on it before the roll went down.
- Installation dependency
- Laps, the direction in which filling is placed, and whether plant tracks directly on the fabric are the whole of the workmanship story, and all of it is covered within hours.
- Weathering and exposure
- Polymer fabrics lose strength in sunlight, and they are made to be covered. How long a roll sits exposed on a site is a question for the manufacturer's documentation.
- Repairability
- Once buried it cannot be inspected, cleaned or replaced without excavating everything above it, which is why the record made before covering matters so much.
- Maintenance
- Silting is gradual and invisible. What is actually maintained is the drainage the fabric protects, including the outlets, because a blocked outlet and a clogged fabric look identical from the surface.
- Documentation
- What the roll actually was, and what the designer selected it against, is the only later evidence that the layer is doing the job it was chosen for.
Exposure

- What is the soil on this site, and who has looked at it rather than assumed what it is?
- How much water is expected to pass through this layer, and where does it go once it has?
- Does the ground contain fines that could migrate into the fabric and clog it over time?
- Will the fabric be left uncovered on site, and for how long, and at what time of year?
- Is there contamination, made ground or fill whose treatment is a specialist matter?
- Is groundwater expected to rise to this level at any point in the year?
Assembly
Substrate and system dependencies
What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.
- The formation is prepared and cleared before the roll goes down; a sharp protrusion or a rutted surface is a problem the fabric does not fix.
- The grading of the layer placed on top decides how hard the fabric is worked and whether it can filter at all.
- Lap widths and lap directions come from the designer and the manufacturer for the actual ground, and the laps are the whole of the continuity story.
- Plant tracking directly on unprotected fabric is the commonest way a layer is damaged before it is ever covered.
- Edges and terminations have to be held down against wind and against dragging until the first layer is placed.
- Pipes, crates, chambers, kerbs and liners all have to be dressed around, and those details are easy to skimp and impossible to see later.
Appearance
Appearance and finish considerations
- It is almost always entirely buried, so appearance is usually not a subject at all.
- Where an edge is left proud at a border, a soil edge or a gravel margin it shows as a pale line and is commonly trimmed back.
- Fabric left visible in planted areas degrades in sunlight and begins to look like what it is.
- In an open gravel finish, a dark fabric reads less than a pale one where it can be glimpsed between the stones.
- It is regularly confused on site with a horticultural weed membrane, which looks similar, costs differently and does a different job.
- Where it is dressed up the side of a trench or a bed, the trimmed line is the only part anyone will ever see.

- What happens at the edges of the treated area, where the fabric stops?
- Is anything likely to be excavated through this layer later, and would anyone know it was there?

- Is there a record of what was laid, and of where the treated area begins and ends?
- If the surface above stops draining, who investigates, and how would they tell a clogged fabric from a blocked outlet?
- What would have to be excavated to reach this layer at all?
- Are the drainage outlets it feeds being maintained, since those fail far more often than the fabric?
- Was the roll label retained or photographed before the layer was covered?
- Is there a drawing anyone would find before digging in this area?
