Overview

What cane webbing is

Cane webbing is not a board. It is a sheet of open mesh woven from the outer skin of the rattan palm, cut into thin strips and worked into a repeating pattern, most often the hexagonal open weave associated with chair backs. There is no core beneath it and no facing applied over it; the woven surface is the whole of the material, and it is supplied by the roll rather than by the sheet.

Because it has no core, it cannot do any of the jobs the rigid panels in this category do. It carries nothing, stiffens nothing and does not close a compartment, since air, dust and light pass straight through the weave. In joinery it is held rather than fixed: soaked and pressed into a routed groove with a reed spline so that it dries tight, captured between the parts of a made frame, or stretched over an opening and fixed from behind.

Its behaviour follows from the fact that it is a natural fibre held in tension. It takes up and gives off moisture with the air around it, so it slackens in damp conditions and tightens again as it dries, and repeated swings between the two are what eventually loosen or split it. Strips also dry brittle where strong sun falls on them, and a broken strand cannot be rewoven in place.

Colour varies between natural, bleached and stained webbing, and between batches of the same kind, while the weave pattern itself sets the scale of the detail across a door.
Installation dependency
The traditional method soaks the webbing and beds it into a groove with a spline so that it dries into tension; simply glued onto a flat frame, it will not behave the same way.
Substrate dependency
The frame carries everything, so the timber section, its joints and its resistance to twisting are what decide whether the panel stays flat and stays taut.
Repairability
A split or pulled strand cannot be rewoven in position, and repair normally means replacing the whole panel within its frame rather than mending the weave.
Maintenance
