Overview

What concrete admixtures is

Admixtures are materials added to concrete in small quantities, relative to the cement, to change the way it behaves while it is fresh, while it is hardening, or once it is hard. They are distinct from additions such as ground slag or fly ash, which replace part of the cement itself and are handled differently within a mix design.

The main families are easy enough to describe. Water reducers and superplasticisers make a mix flow more readily without adding water. Retarders slow setting and accelerators speed it up. Air entrainers introduce a controlled cell structure through the paste. Others aim at reducing shrinkage, resisting water penetration, modifying viscosity, aiding pumping, or colouring the concrete.

What matters to an owner is not the chemistry but the ownership of the decision. Admixture type and dosage are set by the concrete supplier as part of a mix design, worked out against the cement and aggregates actually being used, because admixtures interact with each other and with the binder. Adding water or anything else at the point of discharge undoes that design, which is the most common way a good mix becomes a poor one.

Documentation
An admixture only means something in the context of a mix design. The supplier's mix details, and the delivery ticket naming what was in the load, are the documents that actually describe what was poured.
Installation dependency
Admixtures are batched at the plant under controlled conditions. Site additions of water or anything else after batching change the mix in ways nobody has designed for, and that is where most avoidable problems begin.
Moisture behaviour
Water-resisting admixtures are sometimes discussed as though they made concrete impermeable on their own. They form part of a wider approach that also involves the mix, compaction, joints, detailing and any separate membranes.
Weathering and exposure
Entrained air is commonly discussed for concrete exposed to freezing conditions, and it works by giving water somewhere to go as it expands. Whether it is appropriate here, and to what degree, is a matter for the designer and the supplier.
Appearance
Some admixtures affect the finished look. Setting behaviour changes how and when a surface can be worked, and pigments and certain water-resisting products can alter tone or mottling across a single pour.
Repairability
A repair batched without the admixtures used in the original pour is likely to behave and to look different. Recording what was in the original mix makes any later patching considerably more predictable.

  • What temperature and weather conditions are expected on the day of the pour itself?
  • Is the concrete exposed to freezing conditions, to de-icing salts or to standing water?
  • How far does the concrete have to travel, and how long will it sit in the truck?
  • Is the element indoors, outdoors, buried, or in contact with aggressive ground?
  • Will the pour take place in wind or strong sun that accelerates surface drying?

Assembly

Substrate and system dependencies

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • What the concrete is being placed into or onto, and how that affects workability requirements.
  • How congested the reinforcement is, since flow around bars drives the workability discussion.
  • Whether the element belongs to a scheme relying on membranes and drainage for moisture control.
  • How the pour is jointed and sequenced, which interacts directly with setting time.

Appearance

Appearance and finish considerations

  • Setting behaviour changes the window in which a surface can be floated or trowelled.
  • Pigments introduced into a mix produce colour variation across pours and between batches.
  • Some admixtures can influence surface mottling or blooming, particularly on exposed faces.
  • Where the finish will be seen, trial panels made from the actual mix are the reliable check.

  • What does the supplier say each admixture is intended to achieve in this particular mix?
  • Have the admixtures been checked in combination with the cement and aggregates being used?
  • Is any long-term property being assumed by the design that the mix has to deliver?
  • How will the concrete be cured, given that curing affects durability more than most additions?
  • What is being recorded about the mix so that its behaviour can be understood later?

Upkeep

Maintenance and repair considerations

  • Is the mix design retained so that a matching repair mix could be batched later?
  • How will a repair be made to look consistent with pigmented or specially finished concrete?
  • Who would assess concrete that has not behaved as expected after it was placed?
  • Are delivery tickets kept as a record of what was supplied on each individual load?

Installation

Installation dependencies

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.

  • Batching at the plant, where dosage is measured and controlled under known conditions.
  • Delivery time and distance, since workability changes while concrete is still in transit.
  • Discharge discipline on site, particularly the refusal to add water to a stiffening load.
  • Placing and compaction technique appropriate to the workability that was actually supplied.
  • Curing arrangements, which remain necessary regardless of what the mix contains.

Ask for these in writing, for the specific product being proposed, and keep them with the project record.

  • Admixtures are a supplier decision within a mix design, not a shopping choice for an owner.
  • Adding water on site to make concrete easier to place undoes the mix design entirely.
  • Admixtures interact with each other and with the cement, so combinations need checking.
  • A water-resisting admixture is not a substitute for designed drainage, membranes and detailing.
  • Curing still governs how the concrete turns out, whatever the mix happened to contain.
