Cast Concrete Worktop and Vanity Slab

Overview
What concrete worktop is
A cast concrete worktop is made by placing a cement, aggregate and admixture mix into a mould shaped to the finished top, with reinforcement in the form of mesh, bar or dispersed fibres. Most are precast face down in a workshop so the mould face becomes the finished surface; some are cast in place on site, which changes the finishing method entirely because the surface then has to be worked from above.
The library already covers polished-concrete, and that is a floor: a thick slab, ground and polished after it has cured, supported continuously by the ground below. This is a slim, reinforced element spanning cabinetry, with drainer grooves and sink openings formed into it and edges that are exposed on more than one face. Everything about it, from reinforcement to sealing, follows from being thin, unsupported in places and looked at closely.
The surface is porous once cured and is treated with a sealer, and the choice of sealer is where most of the ownership conversation sits. Fine crazing, colour variation across the slab and a patina that develops around the sink and the hob are normal outcomes rather than defects. Owners who want an unchanging surface are usually happier with a different material, and that conversation is better had before casting than after.

- Moisture behaviour
- Cured concrete is porous, so behaviour depends almost entirely on the sealer over it. Ask what sealer is being used, how it is renewed, and what happens where a sink opening exposes a cut and sealed edge.
- Maintenance
- Sealers wear, and the areas around the sink, the hob and the main preparation zone wear first. How the sealer is refreshed, and whether that is an owner task or a specialist one, should be settled before the slab is cast.
- Appearance
- Colour varies within a single pour and between pours, and the mould face records everything it touches. Fine crazing appears in most cast tops and is part of the character rather than a fault to be fixed.
- Installation dependency
- Precast slabs arrive complete and heavy, so access, lifting and the support arrangement are planned before casting. Cast-in-place work turns the kitchen into a workshop for a period and needs a different programme.
- Repairability
- Chips at edges and corners can often be filled, though a filled repair rarely matches the surrounding surface exactly. Stains that have passed the sealer may need grinding and resealing rather than cleaning.
- Substrate dependency
- The cabinetry becomes a support structure, and the fabricator sets where bearing points and any cantilever occur. Fixing arrangements also have to allow for the slab and the units moving at different rates.
- Surface wear
- Etching from acidic spills and darkening where water sits are the usual wear patterns, and both depend on the sealer rather than the concrete. Treat any resistance claim as belonging to the specific sealer's documentation.

- Where the slab meets a wall, a movement gap and a flexible seal are used rather than a rigid junction.
- Cast-in-place work depends on formwork built against the finished cabinetry, which affects the whole sequence.

- The mould face is the finished face on precast work, so mould quality determines surface quality.
- Pigments give colour through the body, and consistency between separate pours is never guaranteed.
- Exposed aggregate can be revealed by grinding, which produces a very different surface from a mould finish.

- Weight is discovered late in projects, usually when someone tries to carry the slab through a doorway.
- Colour continues to shift for a while after casting, so a sample judged early may mislead.
