Overview

What portland cement is

Portland cement is a fine grey powder made by heating limestone with clay or shale in a kiln, grinding the resulting clinker and adding a small quantity of gypsum to control setting. It is a hydraulic binder, meaning it reacts chemically with water and hardens, including under water, rather than drying out the way a paste that loses solvent does.

It is an ingredient, not a finished material. On its own, cement paste is brittle, shrinks heavily and is rarely used alone. Concrete is cement plus coarse and fine aggregate plus water. Mortar is cement, sand and water with additions such as lime. Screed, render and grout are further combinations. What arrives as bags of cement becomes a different material entirely once it is mixed with something else.

Cement is also supplied in blended forms where part of the Portland clinker is replaced with materials such as ground granulated blast-furnace slag, fly ash or limestone fines. These blends change working time, early behaviour, colour and heat generation, so a bag labelled for one use should not be assumed to behave like another. White and pigmented cements exist where appearance drives the choice.

Installation dependency
Cement hardens by reacting with water, so proportioning, mixing and the quantity of water used change the material produced. Mixing is a site-controlled process, and the bag and data sheet describe what the product expects of it.
Moisture behaviour
Because setting is a chemical reaction, cement-based mixes need moisture retained while they harden. Losing water too early through a dry background, wind or sun affects the result, which is why curing comes up in any discussion of cement work.
Documentation
The bag and the manufacturer's data sheet state what type of cement it is and what it is intended for. Blended and specialist cements behave differently from general-purpose cement, and the documentation is the only reliable guide to which is which.
Appearance
Cement colour varies between batches and between sources, which shows in mortar joints and render as banding if bags from different deliveries are used part way through an elevation. White and pigmented cements are chosen where consistent colour matters.
Substrate dependency
Cement-based mixes bond to and interact with whatever they are applied over. Suction, movement and the hardness of the background all influence whether the mix stays sound, and judging the background is a job for a specialist.
Repairability
Cement-based mortars and renders are generally harder than lime-based alternatives, which affects how they are cut out and replaced and how the surrounding material behaves while a repair is being carried out.

Exposure and environmental conditions

  • Will the mix be placed or applied in cold, hot or windy conditions that affect how it hardens?
  • Is the work exposed to rain before it has hardened, and what protection has been planned?
  • Does the situation involve ground water, sulfates or salts that would influence the cement chosen?
  • Will the finished mix be permanently damp, intermittently wet or normally dry in service?
  • Is frost likely during the setting period, and has that been allowed for in the programme?

Substrate and system dependencies

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • The background absorbs water from a cement mix, and its suction has to be considered before application.
  • Movement in the substrate transfers into a rigid cement-based layer applied over it.
  • Bond depends on the background being sound, clean and free of loose material or contaminants.
  • Where a proprietary system is used, its own binder and primer take precedence over general cement practice.
  • Reinforcement, mesh or beads within a cement layer form part of the assembly rather than optional additions.

Appearance

Appearance and finish considerations

  • Different cement sources and blends produce noticeably different greys once the mix has set.
  • Mortar colour is influenced by the cement, the sand and the water content, so samples are made before work starts.
  • Efflorescence, a white salt deposit, can appear on new cement-based surfaces as moisture leaves them.
  • Adding water to make a mix easier to work changes both the hardened material and its final colour.
  • Where a consistent finish is wanted, securing enough of one batch at the outset is usually discussed.

  • What type of cement has been chosen, and why that one for this situation?
  • How will the work be protected and kept damp while it hardens?
  • Is the exposure likely to include sulfates, salts or repeated wetting and drying?
  • Does the substrate or surrounding material call for a softer or more flexible binder instead?
  • Is the mix proportion being controlled, or judged by eye on site?

Upkeep

Maintenance and repair considerations

  • If a cement-based mortar or render fails locally, how would the repair be matched?
  • Would a repair use the same cement type, and is that recorded anywhere?
  • How should efflorescence or surface dusting be treated, and by whom?
  • Does removing hard cement mortar risk damaging the surrounding masonry units?
  • Who should assess whether an existing render or pointing is doing harm to what is behind it?

Installation

Installation dependencies

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.

  • Mixing proportions, mixing time and water content determine the material that is actually produced.
  • Cement is stored dry, because bags that have taken up moisture do not perform as intended.
  • Working time is limited once water is added, and part-set material cannot be reworked.
  • Curing conditions form part of the work rather than something optional carried out afterwards.
  • Personal protection while handling the material is a matter for the person doing the work.

Blind spots

Commonly overlooked points

  • Cement is a component, so ordering cement is not the same as deciding on a concrete or a mortar.
  • General-purpose bagged cement and the cement inside a manufactured product are not interchangeable.
  • Cement-based mixes carry on reacting after the surface looks finished, which is why early loading matters.
  • Hard cement pointing on soft old brickwork can concentrate damage in the bricks rather than the joints.
  • Bags stored on damp ground or left open deteriorate well before the labelled use-by point.
