Dry-Dash and Roughcast Render

Overview

What dry dash and roughcast is

These are thrown finishes, and the throw is what defines them. In dry dash, a receiving coat is applied to the wall and, while it is still soft, a graded aggregate is cast onto it by hand or machine so that the stones bed into the coat and stand proud of it. In roughcast — called harling in Scotland and often described as wet dash — the aggregate is already in the mix, and the whole wet mix is thrown at the wall and left as it lands. Neither finish is floated, trowelled or brushed into its final appearance.

That makes them a different kind of finish from the renders that reach their appearance by working the surface or by painting it. A dashed or roughcast wall gets its colour from the stone and the mix rather than from a coating, its texture from the throw, and its scale from the size of the aggregate used. Because the surface is broken rather than flat, it sheds and holds water differently across the face, and it catches dirt, moss and organic growth on shaded elevations in a way a smooth face does not.

It is also, on a very large part of the existing housing stock, a finish that is already there. So the conversation about it is far more often a renovation conversation than a new-build one: what is behind it, why it has cracked or hollowed, whether a repair can be blended, whether painting it is a good idea and what painting it commits the building to. Patch repairs are visible because the throw, the gradation and the source of the stone cannot be matched exactly, and painting a dashed wall changes it permanently — the coating fills between the stones and the wall cannot be returned to its unpainted state.

Appearance
Colour comes from the stone and the mix rather than from a coating, and the texture comes from the throw. Aggregate size and source therefore set the scale and the character of the whole elevation, and both are decided before any work starts.
Repairability
A patch is visible because the throw, the gradation and the stone source cannot be matched exactly. Repairs are commonly taken back to a natural break such as a corner, a bead line or an opening rather than stopped in the middle of a face.
Installation dependency
Both finishes are formed by throwing, by hand or by machine, and the consistency of that throw is the finish. There is no later stage at which an uneven face can be worked flat, which is why day joints and operative consistency matter so much.
Substrate dependency
What is behind the finish decides how it behaves. Uneven suction, mixed backgrounds, movement and unresolved damp all show up in a thrown finish, and the coats beneath the finish are specified for the background rather than chosen generically.
Weathering and exposure
A broken surface holds and sheds water differently across its face. Shaded and sheltered elevations commonly darken and grow organic growth sooner than open sunny ones, and staining tracks from cills, copings and roof edges.
Maintenance
Cleaning a textured mineral face is not the same operation as cleaning a smooth one, and what is appropriate depends on the wall behind it. Hollow or drummy areas found by tapping are a maintenance question before they are an appearance one.
Moisture behaviour
The finish is part of a wall assembly rather than a barrier in its own right. Detailing at the base of the wall, at openings, cills and copings does the decisive work, and on older walls the vapour behaviour of the whole build-up is the question.

Exposure and environmental conditions

  • What the weather is forecast to do during throwing and through the early curing period, since frost, heat and rain all act on the work.
  • How exposed the elevation is to driving rain once the finish is in service.
  • Whether shaded elevations stay damp long enough to encourage organic growth on a broken surface.
  • How water is thrown clear at cills, copings and roof edges, since staining on a textured face follows those paths.
  • Whether splash from paving, planting or ground level acts on the base of the wall.
