Overview

What thin-coat render is

A thin-coat render is two products used as one. The first is a base coat — a polymer-modified adhesive mortar applied to the face, into which an alkali-resistant glass-fibre mesh is bedded so the mesh sits within the coat rather than behind it. The second is a topcoat, supplied ready-mixed in a tub rather than mixed from a bag, bound with an acrylic, silicone or silicate binder, pigmented to the finished colour and textured by the float as it is laid off.

The reinforced base coat is the point of the system. It is designed to be carried on a face that is compressible and that moves — most often an insulation board, increasingly a sheathing or cement-based board — rather than on the solid, absorbent masonry that a thick mineral render is built up on. The mesh takes the stresses that would otherwise crack a brittle coat over a soft, jointed background, which is why mesh laps, extra reinforcement at the corners of openings, bead types and the arrangement of movement joints are the substance of the specification and not details around it.

The topcoat is thin and is the weathering and decorative surface in one. Its binder determines how the surface behaves: acrylic, silicone and silicate binders soil, hold colour and pass water vapour differently from one another, and they are not interchangeable within a system. Because the coat is thin and ready-mixed, colour consistency depends on batching and on completing an elevation in a run, and because the texture is produced by the float, the same material laid off by different operatives will not read identically.
