Overview
What cork flooring is
Cork flooring is made from the outer bark of the cork oak, which is stripped from living trees at intervals and regrows, so the raw material is harvested without felling. The bark is granulated, then bound and pressed into blocks that are sliced into tiles, or into layers applied to a board. It is not a timber and it does not behave like one.
Two formats dominate. Solid cork tiles are bonded directly to a prepared base and finished either in the factory or after laying. Cork-faced planks place a cork wear layer over a core, usually with a cork backing layer as well, and are clicked together and floated in the same way as an engineered board. The demands each format places on the base are quite different.
The cell structure is closed and full of air, which is what gives cork its characteristic behaviour: it is warm to the touch, it deadens footfall, and it compresses under load and then recovers slowly. It also shifts colour under strong daylight, so areas kept in shade by rugs and furniture can end up ageing at a visibly different rate from the rest of the floor.

- Acoustic behaviour
- The closed cellular structure absorbs footfall rather than reflecting it, and that is one of the two main reasons cork is chosen at all. What reaches the room below still depends on the whole floor build-up.
- Thermal behaviour
- Cork feels warm underfoot because the air trapped in its cells slows heat leaving the foot. That same characteristic is why any heated floor arrangement has to be confirmed from the specific product's documentation.
- Surface wear
- The material compresses under load and recovers, but recovery is not always complete. Furniture legs and castors leave impressions that may remain, and this is the most common source of later disappointment.
- Appearance
- Granulate size and the way the block is pressed give the characteristic mottled pattern. Colour shifts under daylight, so shaded areas beneath rugs and furniture can end up visibly different from the rest of the floor.
- Substrate dependency
- Bonded tiles need a smooth, sound and dry base, since a thin tile conforms to whatever it is laid on. Floating cork-faced planks shift the requirement towards flatness and stability of the base instead.
- Maintenance
- The finish rather than the cork takes the wear. Whether that finish can be refreshed locally or has to be recoated across the whole floor governs the entire maintenance story and comes from the manufacturer.
- Repairability
- Individual bonded tiles can be lifted and replaced where matching material still exists. On a floating plank floor, replacement follows the same constraints as any other click-jointed board.

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.
- Bonded tiles need a smooth base, because a thin tile follows every ridge and hollow beneath it.
- Floating plank formats need flatness and a stable base, since the joints work at every high spot.
- Where the base is a slab or screed, its moisture condition governs whether bonding is realistic at all.
- The underlay or backing layer in a floating format contributes to the acoustic result and is part of the design.
- Finished floor height and threshold details change depending on which of the two formats is chosen.
Appearance
Appearance and finish considerations
- Granulate size ranges from fine to coarse and changes the character of the finished floor considerably.
- Stained and tinted ranges still shift under daylight, so samples deserve judging over time and in the room.
- Areas permanently shaded by rugs or furniture may not match once the rest of the floor has aged.

- Bonded tiles need the base smoothed first, since nothing in the covering will hide a defect beneath.
- Material is normally conditioned in the space before laying so that it settles to the room.
- Floating formats need perimeter expansion allowance maintained at every edge and around fixed items.
- Finishing after laying takes the room out of use and creates dust, which has to be programmed.
