End Grain Wood Block Flooring

Overview
What end grain wood blocks is
End grain wood block flooring is made from short lengths of timber cut across the grain and set down with the fibre ends uppermost, so the walking surface presents the same face you would see on the top of a chopping block. Blocks may be square, rectangular or roughly rounded, and are bedded onto a solid base and then levelled, sanded and finished as one continuous field.
The distinction from parquet block flooring is grain orientation, and it changes almost everything that follows. Parquet blocks are laid with the face or quarter grain showing and are chosen for the figure and the geometry they produce. End grain blocks show no figure at all in that sense; what reads across the floor is the pattern of growth rings, knots and the block joints themselves. Wear then acts along the length of the fibre bundles rather than across them.
Two practical consequences follow. Indentation tends to compress the fibre ends and is often far less conspicuous than a gouge across face grain, which is why the format became associated with workshops and mills long before it was used decoratively. Against that, exposed end grain absorbs liquids and finishes readily, and timber moves least along the grain, so a floor built this way expands and contracts mainly in the plane of the floor and needs generous provision for that at its edges.

- Surface wear
- Traffic bears on the ends of the fibres rather than across them. Marks tend to bruise and compress rather than tear, so the surface ages by taking on texture instead of showing individual scratches in the way a face grain board does.
- Moisture behaviour
- End grain is the most absorbent face of any piece of timber. Liquid reaching the surface, and moisture arriving through the base, both move into the block more readily than they would into a board laid face up.
- Substrate dependency
- The blocks are bedded onto a solid base and act together as one field, so the base has to be flat, sound and dry. A soft or moving base shows up as blocks standing proud of their neighbours across the floor.
- Appearance
- What you see is the section through the timber: growth rings, the pith, occasional knots and the joint between every block. Colour and ring pattern vary block to block, and the floor reads as a mosaic rather than as a run of planks.
- Installation dependency
- Blocks are set out, bedded and then levelled as one surface, with the field kept back from walls and fixed elements so it can move. Filling between blocks, where it is used at all, is decided before laying rather than afterwards.
- Maintenance
- Finish is absorbed heavily on first application and the floor may take more than a face grain floor would. Recoating intervals follow the finish manufacturer's guidance for the product actually used.
- Repairability
- Individual blocks can be cut out and replaced, and because the visible surface is a section rather than a figure, a replacement often blends more readily than a patched board would once the floor is sanded.

- A solid, flat base is assumed, and preparing it is normally a larger task than laying the blocks themselves.
- Any damp proof provision below the base is central here, because open end grain is unusually receptive to moisture.
- The perimeter has to be designed as a movement allowance, since the whole field expands and contracts together.
- Junctions with other floor finishes need a trim or threshold that permits movement rather than pinning the field.
- Fixed elements built off the floor, such as units and stairs, constrain how the field can move around them.

Appearance and finish considerations
- Ring pattern, pith and knots are the visual character here, and they cannot be selected out of the material.
- Block joints stay visible however carefully the floor is sanded, and they are part of what the finish looks like.
- Finish soaks into end grain unevenly at first, so a sample panel is more informative than a small offcut.
- Darker finishes emphasise the ring pattern, while clear finishes let the natural colour variation dominate.
- Round or irregular blocks leave gaps between units, and how those are treated is a design decision.
