Parquet Block Flooring (Solid Wood Blocks)
Explains how a bonded block floor differs from a nailed or floating board floor, and why the flatness, dryness and rigidity of the base decide the outcome more than the choice of timber does.

Overview
What parquet block flooring is
Parquet block flooring is made from short solid timber blocks, sawn to a consistent size and laid in a repeating geometry such as herringbone, basketweave or brick bond. Blocks may be plain edged, or carry an interlocking or dovetailed side in older stock. Smaller units are also supplied pre-assembled into mosaic panels, either faced on the top with a kraft paper that is stripped off after laying and before sanding, or carried on a mesh or net backing on the underside that stays bedded in the adhesive.
The difference from solid hardwood board flooring is how the floor is held in place. Long tongue and groove boards are nailed or screwed to joists or battens and behave as a deck spanning between supports. Parquet blocks are far too short to span anything, so they are bonded in a continuous bed of adhesive onto a rigid, flat, dry base. The result is a bonded assembly whose weakest point is the bond line rather than the timber.
That changes what goes wrong. A board floor tends to cup, gap or squeak; a block floor lifts, arches or works loose in patches where the bond has failed or where moisture has reached the adhesive from below. Movement is shared out among thousands of small joints and the grain runs in more than one direction across the field, so expansion is usually taken up at a border or perimeter detail rather than at the end of every board.

- Over a base whose moisture condition is unknown, since moisture arriving from below is the usual reason blocks lift.
- Over a flexible or deflecting base, because a bonded floor cannot follow movement that a fixed deck would absorb.
- Where a heated floor build-up is present, since the adhesive, the timber and the operating regime all have to be confirmed from the relevant product documentation.
- Where the room regularly takes water and the drainage design has not yet been settled by a qualified professional.
- Where the base cannot be brought to the flatness a full adhesive bed assumes without a levelling layer first.

Qualitative topics worth raising. Measured values, classes and grades come from the manufacturer's technical documentation for the specific product, not from a reference page.
- Substrate dependency
- The base carries the entire floor. It has to be sound, flat and clean enough for a continuous adhesive bed, because a block bridging a hollow has nothing beneath it and will sound and feel loose long before it actually comes free.
- Moisture behaviour
- Timber moves with the moisture around it and the adhesive is vulnerable to moisture arriving from below. The condition of the base and the humidity the room will really run at both belong in the discussion before anything is bonded down.
- Installation dependency
- Setting out decides the result. Centre lines, the direction of the pattern and the position of any border are fixed before the first block goes down, and adhesive choice is matched to the base and the block by the supplier rather than assumed.
- Appearance
- Block size, pattern and grain direction change how light reads across the floor, because alternate blocks reflect differently. Colour variation between blocks is inherent to solid timber and is agreed from samples rather than taken on trust.
- Surface wear
- The wearing surface is solid timber through its depth, so the floor can be sanded and refinished. Each sanding removes material, and how often that can be repeated depends on what is actually there rather than on any general figure.
- Repairability
- Single blocks can be lifted and replaced, which is easier than patching a continuous covering, but the replacement has to match in species, cut and colour, and new finish rarely blends invisibly into an aged floor.
- Maintenance
- The applied finish, not the timber, takes the daily wear, so the cleaning regime follows whatever finish is used. Products the finish manufacturer excludes matter far more than general advice about wood floors.
Exposure

- What humidity range will this room actually run at once it is occupied and heated?
- How will the moisture condition of the base be established before any adhesive is spread?
- Does the floor take long periods of direct sun through glazing, and how will that affect colour?
- Is there any heating within the floor build-up, and what does its documentation say about a bonded timber finish?
- What will be dragged, dropped or wheeled across this floor in ordinary daily use?
Assembly
Substrate and system dependencies
What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.
- A levelling layer is often needed, since a full adhesive bed assumes a base flatter than most slabs arrive.
- Any separating layer, damp proof membrane or insulation below the base is part of the decision, not a detail.
- Over a timber deck an overlay board is normally added first, because a block bonded across a board joint is bonded to two pieces of timber that move independently of one another.
- The perimeter detail has to leave room for movement, normally at a border or under the skirting line.
- Old adhesive or bitumen residue on the base needs identifying before any new bonded floor is considered.
Appearance
Appearance and finish considerations
- Herringbone, chevron and basketweave layouts read very differently in a narrow room than in a square one.
- Alternating grain direction makes the floor change tone as you walk across it, which is inherent to the format.
- A border frames the field and absorbs awkward junctions, but it also enlarges the setting out work.
- Site finishing gives a continuous surface across the whole field, while factory finished blocks show a joint at every edge.

Questions to raise rather than a service life to expect. No material has a universal lifespan — it depends on the assembly, the exposure and the upkeep.
- How is the bond expected to behave over time given this base, this adhesive and this timber together?
- What happens at the perimeter when the floor grows in summer and shrinks again in winter?
- Will point loads from furniture or castors mark the finish, and how would that be dealt with?
- How many times could this floor realistically be sanded back, given the block depth being supplied?
- Durability here belongs to base, adhesive, block and finish as a set rather than to the timber alone.
Upkeep
Maintenance and repair considerations
- What cleaning method does the finish manufacturer describe, and which products are explicitly excluded?
- How would a lifted or loose block be diagnosed, and what would putting it back involve?
- Is spare stock from the same batch being retained so that later repairs can be matched?
- If the floor is refinished later, will the whole field be done at once or only the worn areas?
- Who will actually maintain this floor, and does the regime match what they are equipped to do?

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.
- Blocks are normally conditioned in the space before laying so that they settle to the room rather than the store.
- Adhesive selection depends on the base, the block and the site conditions, and is settled with the supplier.
- Setting out is done from the room, not from a wall, so that the pattern lands squarely on the main sight lines.
- Sanding and finishing follow laying as separate operations, each with its own dust, access and drying implications.
- Other trades need to be clear of the room while a bonded floor is laid and finished, which affects the programme.

Ask for these in writing, for the specific product being proposed, and keep them with the project record.
- The block manufacturer's guidance on base preparation and on the condition the base is expected to be in.
- Adhesive guidance matched to the specific base present on site rather than to a generic screed.
- Species, cut and grade information for the blocks being supplied, with samples laid up in the pattern.
- Finish manufacturer instructions, including excluded cleaning products and any recoating guidance.
- Batch references, so later repairs can be matched against what was originally laid.
- Setting out guidance for the block size supplied, including how borders and perimeter details are expected to work.

Blind spots
Commonly overlooked points
- Herringbone and chevron are different geometries, and stock cut for one cannot be laid in the other, which is discovered after ordering more often than it should be.
- A block floor that sounds hollow underfoot is reporting a bond problem, not a timber problem.
- Setting out errors are locked in permanently once the adhesive has grabbed, unlike a floating floor.
- Blocks bought as a job lot from different sources rarely match once they are sanded and finished together.
- Old block floors were often laid in bitumen, and that residue governs what can be bonded over it now.
