Overview
What natural fibre carpet is
Natural fibre carpet is a group of woven floor coverings made from plant material rather than from wool or a synthetic filament. Sisal is drawn from agave leaves, coir from coconut husk, jute from the stem of the jute plant, and seagrass from a grass grown in wet coastal ground. The fibres are spun or twisted into yarns and woven into flat or textured constructions, then backed before being fitted, or made up as a bordered rug.
It is not simply another broadloom construction. Wool and nylon take dye readily and tolerate water-based cleaning. These plant fibres are stiff, low in elasticity and woven flat, so seasonal moisture change shows up as dimensional change in the fitted width rather than being taken up by the fibre, and water marks and shrinks them rather than cleaning them. Seagrass in particular carries a naturally waxy surface that resists dye, which is why it is generally sold in the colours the plant gives rather than matched to a scheme.
Construction follows the fibre. Weaves such as boucle, herringbone and panama give a coarser and firmer surface than a cut pile, and because colour arrives largely with the plant, variation between production runs is inherent rather than a fault. Backings differ as well: some products are latex backed for bonding, others carry a secondary woven backing intended for stretching over perimeter fixing strips, and the two are fitted in quite different ways.

- Moisture behaviour
- The fibres take up and give off moisture with the air around them, so a fitted covering can tighten or slacken as the humidity of the room changes. That behaviour belongs to the plant material and is not removed by the backing applied to it.
- Maintenance
- Cleaning is generally dry-method led. Water-based methods that suit wool or nylon can mark these fibres or shrink the weave, so the regime should be taken from the supplier of the specific product before anything is laid.
- Appearance
- Colour arrives mostly with the plant, so tone varies between production runs and a later addition rarely matches an earlier one exactly. Weave direction also catches light differently across a room, which is worth seeing at full size rather than as a sample.
- Surface wear
- A coarse woven surface shows walking routes as a change of texture as much as a change of colour. How quickly that happens depends on traffic, fibre and weave, and is not something a reference page can state for a particular room.
- Installation dependency
- Some products are latex backed for bonding and others carry a woven secondary backing for stretching over perimeter fixing strips, and the two are not interchangeable. The fitting method has to match the backing the product actually carries.
- Repairability
- Local repair is awkward because the weave runs continuously and colour matching between runs is unreliable. Where damage is likely, an approach based on rugs or renewable sections is worth discussing before the covering is ordered.

- The covering is thin and firm, so ridges, fixing heads and debris left in the base read through as lines underfoot. The condition of the base is settled before the covering is chosen rather than afterwards.

- The base has to be dry and flat, because a firm woven covering follows it rather than disguising it.
- Perimeter fixing strips and an underlay suit a woven secondary backing, while a latex backed product is bonded instead.
- Timber decks generally need an overlay board so that board joints and fixings do not read through.
- Where a resilient layer is wanted beneath, it forms part of the build-up and affects how the covering is fixed.
- Perimeter and doorway details are set out in advance because a woven edge cannot be improvised neatly.
