Overview

What broadloom carpet is

Broadloom carpet is manufactured as a continuous width on a wide loom or tufting machine, delivered as a roll, and then cut and fitted to the shape of the room. Most domestic carpet is tufted, with yarn stitched into a primary backing and locked in place by a secondary backing, while woven constructions build the pile and the backing together in a single operation.

The fitting method is what distinguishes it from carpet tiles. A fitted carpet is usually stretched over a separate underlay and held at the perimeter on gripper, though it may instead be bonded directly to the base. Stretching puts the carpet under tension so that it lies flat, and if that tension is lost the carpet ripples, at which point re-stretching rather than replacement is normally the answer.

Seams fall only where roll widths meet, so a fitted carpet gives a continuous surface that a modular floor cannot, but every seam has to be planned. Seams are usually kept clear of the main traffic route and away from raking light, and a patterned carpet has to be matched across them, which affects how much material the room actually needs.

Installation dependency
A stretched installation depends on tension held at the perimeter. Rippling and buckling are usually a tension or a fitting matter rather than a fault in the carpet itself, and re-stretching is the normal response to them.
Appearance
Seams occur only at roll junctions, so the floor reads as one surface. Where a seam does fall, raking light across the pile makes it far more visible than any difference in colour would on its own.
Substrate dependency
The base has to be sound, dry and free of anything that will read through the pile. Old boards, proud nail heads and debris show as lines and lumps once the carpet has been stretched over the top of them.
Acoustic behaviour
Pile and underlay together soften footfall and absorb some airborne sound within the room. What passes into the structure below is a property of the whole floor rather than of the carpet considered alone.
Repairability
Repair means patching a piece in, and the patch shows unless the pattern, the pile direction and the batch all match. This is the principal trade against a modular carpet, and it is worth weighing at the outset.
Maintenance
Soil concentrates along walked routes and cannot be moved elsewhere, since the covering is fixed in place. Cleaning method depends on the fibre and the construction and comes from the manufacturer rather than from habit.
Moisture behaviour
Damp reaching the backing and the underlay is harder to detect and harder to dry out than on a hard covering, so the condition of the base and of the perimeter is worth establishing before anything is fitted.

  • Where will the traffic routes fall, and can the seams be kept clear of them?
  • Does raking light from a window cross the floor where a seam would otherwise sit?
  • Has the moisture condition of the base been established, particularly on a ground floor?
  • Will castor chairs be used, and has a protective arrangement been discussed?
  • How much grit will be walked in, and is entrance matting part of the plan?

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • The underlay is part of the assembly and affects comfort, sound and how the pile wears.
  • Board floors need checking for loose fixings and proud nail heads before anything is laid over them.
  • Gripper at the perimeter has to be fixed into a base that will actually hold it under tension.
  • A damp base affects the backing and the underlay before it affects the pile, so it is checked first.
  • Total build-up height changes door clearances and the junction with adjoining floor finishes.

Appearance and finish considerations

  • Seam positions are the single most important appearance decision and should be agreed before cutting.
  • Pile direction runs consistently across the floor and changes how the colour reads from each end of the room.
  • Patterned carpets need matching across seams, which increases the quantity of material required.
  • Stair fitting shows the pile and the pattern differently from a flat floor and is planned separately.
  • A patch repair remains visible unless the pattern, the pile direction and the batch all correspond.

  • What happens along the seams as they are walked over repeatedly?
  • Service life depends on fibre, construction, underlay, fitting and cleaning together.

  • What cleaning method does the manufacturer describe for this fibre and this construction?
  • How would a burn, a stain or a damaged area actually be repaired in practice?
  • Is offcut material from the same roll being retained for a possible later patch?
  • Who would re-stretch the carpet if ripples appear, and is that covered by the fitting arrangement?
  • How often does the guidance suggest deep cleaning, and by what method?

Installation

Installation dependencies

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.

  • Seam layout is planned before cutting and cannot be adjusted afterwards.
  • The base has to be prepared and the underlay laid before the carpet is stretched over it.
  • Gripper positions and perimeter details govern whether tension can be held at all.
  • Doorways, thresholds and stair nosings are separate details that are set out in advance.
  • Material is normally conditioned in the space so that it relaxes before it is fitted.

  • Pile direction affects the apparent colour, so a sample viewed the wrong way round misleads.
  • Retaining offcuts is the only way a later patch has any real chance of matching.
