Floor Trim and Transition Profile (Threshold Strip)

Overview

What floor transition trim is

A floor trim or transition profile is the fixed section that closes the edge of a covering in the plane of the floor. The common families are the flat cover strip, the T section used where two coverings of similar thickness meet, the ramped or reducing section used where one is thicker than the other, and the end or edge section used where a covering simply stops against something else.

The step edge is a different problem and belongs to a stair nosing. A transition profile works flat: it resolves a change of material at a doorway, a change of level between adjoining rooms, or the free edge where a covering meets a hearth, a threshold or a fitted unit. Where a nosing answers one repeated edge condition on a flight, a transition profile has to suit whichever pair of coverings turns up on either side of it.

The detail matters most under floating floors. A laminate, rigid core or engineered floor laid unbonded needs a free perimeter so that it can move, and a doorway is where that perimeter has to be interrupted; a T section in the opening is what lets the movement gap continue while still giving a finished edge. Fixings vary between concealed base rails, screws through the visible leg and adhesive, and each asks something different of the substrate beneath the opening.

Installation dependency
Base rail, screw and adhesive fixings each carry consequences. Anything that penetrates the substrate has to be checked against what lies beneath the opening, which on a modern floor may be a membrane, insulation or a heating layer.
Substrate dependency
The section is only as sound as what it is fixed to. A doorway often sits over a joint between two different bases, and that junction has to be made good before a profile can be held down evenly across it.
Appearance
The profile reads as a band across the opening and is seen from both rooms at once. Its width, its finish and whether it sits under the closed door leaf or in front of it are all deliberate decisions rather than site details.
Moisture behaviour
A junction at a doorway is also a route for water travelling along the floor. What that means at a bathroom, utility or external door depends on the whole build-up and its waterproofing strategy, which is a matter for a qualified professional.
Repairability
Sections held by a base rail or by screws can be lifted and renewed without disturbing either covering; bonded sections usually cannot. Which of those is being used decides how a damaged trim gets dealt with later.
Documentation
The manufacturer's section drawing states the covering thicknesses the profile accepts and how it is meant to be fixed, and that is the reference the installer works to rather than a generic doorway detail.

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • The section is selected once both covering thicknesses are known, not before either is chosen.
  • What lies under the opening has to be established before any fixing is driven into it.
  • A floating floor needs its movement gap maintained through the opening rather than pinched by the trim.
  • Where two different bases meet at the doorway, the junction is made good before the trim goes down.
  • Textile coverings need their edge held down or turned, which changes the section required.

  • The profile is seen from both rooms, so its finish is judged against two schemes rather than one.
  • Position relative to the closed door leaf decides whether the strip is visible from the corridor.

  • Can this section be lifted and renewed without taking up either covering?
  • How is dirt cleaned out of the junction between the section and the coverings?
  • Is the same profile likely to be available if one length has to be replaced later?
  • Who notices a section starting to lift, and what happens when they do?
  • If one room is re-covered, does this trim stay in place or come out?

Installation

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.

  • Base rails are fixed before the coverings are laid, so the decision comes early rather than at the end.
  • The trim is set out against the door leaf position rather than simply centred in the opening.
  • Both coverings have to arrive at the opening cut cleanly, because the trim covers only so much.
  • Adhesive fixings depend on the substrate being clean, sound and prepared as the product requires.
  • Where a heated floor runs through the opening, mechanical fixings are checked before drilling.

Blind spots

Commonly overlooked points

  • The trim is chosen last, at which point neither covering thickness suits the section available.
  • The movement gap of a floating floor is pinched at the doorway and the floor then buckles elsewhere.
  • A trim is used to hide a levelling problem, which simply moves the fault somewhere more visible.
  • Nobody decides where the section sits relative to the door leaf until the door is being hung.
  • Fixings are driven into a doorway without anyone establishing what runs beneath it.
