What resin-bound surfacing is
Resin-bound aggregate surfacing is made by mixing dried, closely sized aggregate with a two-part resin binder in a forced-action mixer until every particle is coated, then spreading and trowelling the mixture out over a prepared base and leaving it to cure. Because the stones are coated rather than embedded, they touch one another and the spaces between them remain open. The finished surface is therefore permeable through its own body, and that single fact governs almost everything else about it.
This is where the naming confusion that surrounds the product has to be settled. Resin-bonded surfacing is a different thing: a resin film is applied to a base and loose chippings are scattered onto it, so only the underside of each stone is held, the surface is loose-textured to the touch and it is not permeable at all. Resin-bound and resin-bonded differ by one letter, are often confused in conversation and occasionally in writing, and produce surfaces that look, feel, drain and wear differently. Anyone comparing quotations should check which of the two is actually being described.
Being a trowel-laid material, it is a workmanship-dependent surface rather than a manufactured one. It is mixed on site in batches, so consistency between batches, the temperature the work is done at, the working time of the resin and the hand of the person laying it all show in the finished result. It cures chemically rather than by drying, which means the conditions during curing are as much part of the outcome as the conditions during laying.
The permeability only means something if the construction under it is permeable too. A bound surface laid over an impermeable base drains straight through and then has nowhere to go but sideways, so water arrives at the edges instead of soaking away, which is not what anyone was buying. That makes the base — whether it is an open-textured bound base built for the purpose, or an existing solid surface being covered — the first question rather than a detail, and an edge restraint is needed either way, because the material has no strength at an unsupported arris.

- Moisture behaviour
- The body of the surface is open, so water passes through it. Whether that helps depends entirely on where the water goes next, which is a property of the base and the drainage rather than of the surfacing.
- Substrate dependency
- The base carries everything. A bound surface is a thin wearing layer, so cracks, movement or weakness underneath appear in it, and an impermeable base cancels the permeability of the surface above.
- Installation dependency
- It is mixed in batches and trowelled by hand, so the working time of the resin, the temperature, the weather and the applicator's consistency all show in the finished surface.
- Appearance
- The look comes from the aggregate — its colour, its size range and how uniform it is — while the resin decides gloss and how the surface ages. Batch variation in stone is visible across a large area.
- Weathering and exposure
- Resin binders differ in how they respond to sunlight, and some yellow more than others over time. What a particular system does is described in its own documentation.
- Surface wear
- Wear shows as stone loss where the surface is turned on, scuffed or shovelled, typically at turning points and where vehicles brake.
- Maintenance
- The open body silts up with grit, leaf litter and moss unless it is cleaned, and a blocked surface has lost the property it was chosen for.

- Repairs are possible but a patch laid later rarely matches a weathered surface, so the join tends to be visible for the life of the surfacing.

- Movement and construction joints in the base need addressing, because they will otherwise appear in the surfacing.
- Moisture in the base at the time of laying affects the bond, and is a checked condition rather than an assumption.
