What stone kerb and edging is
Kerbs and edgings are linear units cut from hard stone and worked to a consistent cross-section along their length. Sections include square, splayed, half-battered, bullnosed and flat edging strips, and they are supplied in straight lengths together with radius units, quadrants, transitions and dropped units where a crossing or an access point interrupts the run.
Their purpose is not to be a surface. A kerb line defines the edge of a paved area, holds the paving alongside it in position, forms one side of a drainage channel and makes a controlled change of level from one surface to another. The visible upstand is only part of the unit: a significant portion normally sits below the finished surface, and the concrete bed and surround supporting it are built as part of the works.
That is what separates kerbs and edgings from natural-stone-setts and other paving. Setts are the surface; kerbs are the frame around it. The two are often specified in the same stone and laid in the same operation, but they answer different questions, and how a kerb line is founded, supported, jointed and drained is an engineering matter for a qualified professional rather than a material choice made from a catalogue.

- Section, face treatment and the tightness and regularity of the joints determine how a kerb line reads. A long straight run shows up any inconsistency in level or alignment very clearly.
- Surface wear
- Kerb faces take impact from vehicles, plant and machinery in ordinary use. What that does to a particular stone is a question for the supplier about that stone, not a general property of granite or of stone.
- Repairability
- Individual units can usually be taken up and reset or replaced, but that means disturbing the surrounding construction. Ask what replacement would involve and whether matching units would still be obtainable.

- What supports the kerb line, and what sits behind and beneath it, decides whether it holds its line. All of that is designed by a qualified professional rather than chosen with the units.

- The paving that abuts the kerb is coordinated with it, because the two are built together and to the same levels.
- Drainage components, gullies and channel lines are positioned as part of the same setting out.
- Buried services crossing beneath a kerb line are located in advance, since disturbing a completed run later is disruptive.
