Overview

What esd flooring is

Static dissipative and conductive flooring covers vinyl sheet and tile, resin coatings and occasionally rubber or carpet products manufactured with conductive material distributed through them, commonly carbon in the form of veins, fibres or fillers. The two names describe different bands of electrical resistance, and which band is required comes from the process being carried out in the room rather than from the covering catalogue.

What makes this distinct from an ordinary vinyl or resin floor is not the surface, which can look identical, but the build-up beneath and the connection out of it. A conductive primer or adhesive, metal strips laid into that layer, and a connection back to the building's earth turn the covering into a continuous electrical path. Connection work of that kind is for a qualified electrical professional. An identical looking covering installed without any of it is simply a floor.

Verification is therefore by measurement on the completed installation rather than by the product name on the delivery note. Readings respond to humidity, to footwear, to what has been used to clean the floor and to anything applied over it, which is why an ordinary floor polish can defeat the whole intention. Cleaning products and maintenance procedures are part of the specification here in a way they are not for a decorative floor.

Installation dependency
The covering is only one element. A conductive primer or adhesive, the metal strips laid into it and the connection out to earth make up the system, and any of them omitted or altered changes what the floor actually does.
Documentation
The requirement comes from the process, and it is expressed as a resistance band with a test method. Both belong in the project documentation, and both need to be agreed before a covering is chosen rather than afterwards.
Maintenance
Ordinary floor polish and some cleaning products can insulate the surface and defeat the entire purpose of the installation. The manufacturer's list of permitted products is part of the specification, not a maintenance detail.
Substrate dependency
The base carries a bonded build-up, so its flatness, soundness and preparation matter as they would for any bonded floor. Poor preparation shows through the covering and can also interrupt the layers beneath it.
Moisture behaviour
The base has to be assessed for moisture before any bonded layer goes down. Ambient humidity also affects readings taken on the finished floor, which is one reason testing conditions are recorded alongside results.
Appearance
Conductive material through the covering usually shows as veining, flecking or a darker tone, and the range of colours is generally narrower than for a decorative equivalent of the same product family.
Repairability
A repair has to restore the electrical path, not just the surface, so patching involves the conductive layers and a retest afterwards. That makes local repairs a specialist operation rather than a routine one.

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • A conductive primer or adhesive layer sits between the base and the covering and is part of the system.
  • Metal strips within that layer and their route to an earth point are designed rather than improvised.
  • The connection to the building's earth is work for a qualified electrical professional.
  • Where the floor sits over a raised access system, the two build-ups have to be considered together.
  • The base needs the preparation any bonded covering or resin system assumes, including moisture assessment.

Appearance

Appearance and finish considerations

  • Conductive veining or flecking is visible in the covering and cannot be removed for appearance reasons.
  • Colour ranges are narrower than for decorative products in the same family, which surprises people late on.
  • Welded seams in sheet products are visible as a fine line, and their positions are planned in advance.
  • Resin versions are seamless and read as a continuous plane, which is a different look from sheet or tile.

  • How is the electrical behaviour expected to change with wear over the life of the installation?
  • How often will the floor be retested, and who holds responsibility for arranging that?
  • What happens if a reading falls outside the required band after the space is in use?
  • How does the covering respond to the traffic, trolleys and equipment this room will actually see?
  • How long the installation keeps behaving as intended depends on traffic, cleaning and the environment, and is a matter for testing rather than for a page.

Upkeep

Maintenance and repair considerations

  • Which cleaning products are permitted by the manufacturer, and which are explicitly excluded?
  • Who will clean this floor, and how will they know not to treat it as an ordinary covering?
  • How is a damaged area repaired so that the electrical path is restored rather than just the surface?
  • Is the floor retested after any repair, who arranges that, and where are the results recorded?
  • Is spare material from the same batch being kept on site so that a later repair uses the same product?

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.

  • The covering is bought and the earthing build-up is forgotten, which leaves an ordinary floor that looks correct.
  • Ordinary floor polish applied by a well-meaning cleaner can undo the entire installation overnight.
  • The requirement belongs to the process, not to the flooring specification, and it needs to come from that side first.
  • Testing after handover is left unassigned, so no one can demonstrate what the floor is doing.
  • Footwear and floor are measured together in some methods, which changes what a result actually means.
