Explains why a filler bound homogeneous tile behaves and is maintained quite differently from a layered vinyl with a printed film and a protective wear layer over it.

Overview

What vinyl composition tile is

Vinyl composition tile is a semi-flexible floor tile made from a polymer binder carrying a high proportion of mineral filler, with pigment blended through the mix. The compound is pressed and cut into tiles, so the colour and the veining pattern run through the body of the tile rather than sitting on its face. Tiles are laid fully bonded in adhesive over a smooth, dry base.

The difference from luxury vinyl tile is structural. Luxury vinyl tile is a layered product: a backing, a printed decor film that provides the appearance, and a clear wear layer above it whose whole job is to protect that print. Vinyl composition tile has no clear wear layer at all. The surface being walked on is the same filled compound the whole way down, so wear does not remove a picture, it simply exposes more of the same material.

The consequence is that maintenance defines this floor. The high filler content leaves a relatively porous surface, so these floors are conventionally maintained with an applied floor polish that is periodically stripped and renewed, and the appearance of the floor at any moment depends on that regime rather than on a factory applied finish. Where that routine is not going to happen, the floor will not look the way the sample suggested.

The applied polish is effectively part of the specification. Stripping and recoating is the routine these floors were designed around, and skipping it changes both the appearance and how the surface responds to soiling.
Surface wear
There is no clear wear layer to wear through, because colour and pattern run through the body of the tile. Wear shows as a change in surface character and sheen rather than as a printed pattern disappearing.
Substrate dependency
A thin bonded tile conforms to the base beneath it. Trowel ridges, old adhesive, fastener heads and debris all read through as visible lines, and the joints between tiles do nothing to conceal that.
Moisture behaviour
The tile is polymer based but the adhesive and the base are not. Residual moisture in a slab or screed is the usual reason bonded tiles lift or curl at their edges, so the base is assessed before laying begins.
Appearance
Colour runs through the tile, which suits strong single colours and geometric layouts. The visible grid of joints is intrinsic to the format, and pattern layouts are set out from the room rather than from a corner.
Repairability
Individual tiles can be lifted and replaced, which is the practical advantage over a sheet covering. A new tile will not carry the polish history of its neighbours, so the repair shows until the floor is next stripped.
Installation dependency
Tiles are laid into adhesive tile by tile from set out lines, so alignment errors accumulate across a room. Adhesive choice is matched to the base and the tile by the supplier rather than assumed from experience elsewhere.

  • A boarded deck is overlaid before tiling, because a rigid tile bridging a board joint is held on adhesive at both ends and works loose at whichever end moves.
  • Perimeter details, coving and skirting all need deciding before the tiles are set out.
  • Any moisture control provision below the base is part of the decision, not a separate matter.

  • Tone varies slightly from one tile to the next in a heavily filled compound, so a laid floor reads as a blend of close shades rather than as one flat colour.
  • The joint grid is always visible, and geometric layouts turn that into a deliberate pattern.
  • Sheen comes from the applied polish, so the floor looks different immediately after maintenance than before it.
  • Directional patterns within tiles can be laid with or against each other, which changes the whole floor.
  • Colour matching between batches is worth checking on delivery rather than after laying has started.
