Linseed Oil Glazing Putty for Timber Rebates

Overview

What linseed glazing putty is

Glazing putty is a stiff paste made from finely ground whiting, which is a form of calcium carbonate, blended with a drying oil, traditionally linseed. It is worked by hand until it is pliable, pressed into the rebate to bed the pane, and then struck with a knife to a bevel that sheds water away from the glass. A separate version formulated for metal casements exists and behaves differently from the timber grade.

What makes it a distinct material is how it sets. Putty hardens by oxidation of the oil, skinning first and stiffening slowly through its depth, rather than staying permanently plastic. A butyl glazing tape stays soft for life and is not painted, and a silicone glazing sealant cures to a rubber that in most grades will not take paint, so the bead is the finish. Gun applied sealants differ among themselves here: an acrylic frame sealant is made to be overpainted. Putty is distinct in depending on that paint film to survive, and the paint line onto the glass is part of the traditional detail.

That difference sets the whole repair economy of a traditional window. A hardened putty line cracks and eventually falls out, and the usual remedy is to rake out the failed lengths and renew them while the sash stays in place, rather than to strip the entire window. It also depends on the substrate: a bare, thirsty timber rebate draws the oil out of the putty, which is why preparation of the rebate is part of the work rather than an optional refinement.

Weathering and exposure
The struck bevel sheds water away from the glass and the paint film protects the putty itself. Once the paint fails, the putty is exposed and its deterioration follows, which is why the two are inseparable in practice.
