Linseed Oil Paint for Timber and Metal

Overview

What linseed oil paint is

Linseed oil paint is pigment ground into linseed oil, pressed from flax seed and usually processed to improve its drying. The oil is the entire binder. There is no alkyd resin and, in the traditional form, little or no solvent thinner. Curing happens by oxidation: the oil takes up oxygen from the air and cross links into a solid, which is a chemical change rather than the simple evaporation that dries a water based paint.

The comparison that matters is with modern alkyd gloss. Alkyd paint carries a resin dissolved in solvent, and it builds a comparatively thick, hard, level film that sits on top of the timber. Linseed oil paint is thinner bodied and soaks into the surface, so the pigmented oil is partly within the wood rather than only over it. It stays more flexible with the timber's movement and weathers by chalking rather than flaking. Its nearest sibling is the exterior wood oil entry, which is penetrating too but translucent and left to show the grain, where this paint is opaque and covers it.

That difference reshapes maintenance. A flaking film has to be scraped back to sound material before repainting, while a chalking surface is cleaned down and recoated over what remains, so the cycle is more frequent but far less destructive. High pigment loading, particularly with mineral pigments, and the quality of the oil separate one product from another, and joinery and ironwork rather than decking are where this paint is normally met.

The finish works with absorbent, bare or previously oil finished timber, and with prepared ferrous metal. Over an existing plastic film it has nothing to penetrate, which changes the recommendation entirely.
Weathering and exposure
External surfaces degrade by gradual chalking of the pigmented oil rather than by blistering, and the rate depends on orientation, exposure and how much rain and sun the elevation takes.
Maintenance
Upkeep is recoating over a cleaned surface rather than stripping, so the work is lighter each time but happens more often. No interval can be stated without knowing the exposure.
Repairability
Local damage can usually be cleaned and recoated without cutting back to bare timber, which is a real advantage on delicate historic joinery with fine mouldings.
Appearance
The dried film is thinner than an alkyd film and follows the grain and tool marks of the timber rather than levelling them out, giving a softer sheen that changes as the surface ages.

  • The paint cannot succeed where the joinery detailing lets water sit, and that is a carpentry matter rather than a decorating one.
