Silvered Mirror Glass (Backed Reflective Glass)

Distinguishes a rear silvered opaque product from reflective coated glazing that is meant to be seen through, and explains why edges, moisture and adhesives cause most of the failures owners encounter.

Overview

What mirror glass is

Mirror glass starts as clear or low iron float glass. A reflective silver layer is deposited on the rear face, then covered by a further metallic layer and by protective backing paints. The image you see is formed behind the glass, not on its surface, and everything that keeps the mirror working sits in those thin backing layers rather than in the glass. Some mirrors also carry a backing film or membrane applied over the paint.

That construction separates it from reflective coated glazing such as solar control glass, which is made to be seen through and has its coating engineered for a position inside a sealed unit. A mirror is opaque by intention, its reflective layer a chemically deposited film protected only by paint, so its weak point is the backing rather than the glass. Its nearest neighbour is the back painted glass panel, also rear coated and finished to template rather than cut on site, whose rear layer is an opaque cured colour coat read as a surface rather than deposited silver read as a reflection.

The vulnerability therefore sits behind the glass and at its edges. Moisture creeping in at an unsealed edge, an adhesive that attacks the backing paint, or liquid reaching a cut edge all attack the silver from behind, and the result is the dark creeping edge familiar from old bathroom mirrors. Variants include low iron mirror for truer colour, tinted mirror in bronze and grey, and antiqued mirror in which the backing is deliberately distressed.

Moisture behaviour
Moisture reaching the rear face or the cut edges attacks the silver from behind, and the resulting dark creeping edge cannot be reversed. Sealing, ventilation behind the panel and keeping water off the edges are the design questions.
Appearance
Ordinary float glass carries a slight green cast that shows in a mirror, particularly in a large panel. Low iron versions reflect more neutrally, and tinted and antiqued finishes change the character deliberately.
Installation dependency
Fixing method decides the fate of the backing. Adhesive compatibility, ventilation behind the panel and the way edges are protected are settled with the mirror supplier rather than left to whatever is in the van.
Surface wear
The front face is glass and can be scratched by abrasive cleaning, while the vulnerable layers sit behind. Cleaning practice therefore matters at the edges far more than in the middle of the panel.
Repairability
A mirror with edge corrosion cannot be repaired and is replaced, and matching an existing tinted or antiqued panel is unpredictable because these finishes vary between batches.

The supplier's information covers the backing type, any applied backing film, approved adhesives and cleaning guidance, and it is the reference point rather than general assumptions about mirrors.

  • The wall behind must be flat, dry and stable, and any dampness in it is dealt with before a mirror goes up.
  • Fixing method, whether adhesive, clips, frame or joinery rebate, is chosen with the supplier and the backing in mind.
  • A ventilated gap behind the panel is a detail worth designing rather than an accident of the fixing.
  • Where the mirror sits in joinery, the panel construction and the way edges are covered belong to the same decision.

Blind spots

Commonly overlooked points

  • The vulnerable part of a mirror is behind it, which is why an apparently clean surface can be failing invisibly at the edges.
  • Adhesive incompatibility shows up as a mark or a bloom long after the installer has left the building.
  • Water that reaches the cut edge works in behind the backing, which is why the bottom edge is the part of a mirror least able to tolerate standing liquid.
  • Fixing tight to a wall with no ventilation traps moisture exactly where the backing is least able to cope.
  • Cutting a mirror on site creates fresh unprotected edges that were never part of the manufacturer's product.
