Overview

What back painted glass is

Back painted glass is a glass panel with an opaque coating applied to its rear face and cured, so the colour is seen through the thickness of the glass rather than sitting on top of it. The coating is roller-applied or sprayed in the factory and then hardened, and it is usually given a protective backing layer. What reaches site is a finished panel, not a sheet of glass to be decorated later.

That is what separates it from the float glass and toughened glass entries elsewhere in the library. Those describe the substrate: what the glass is and how it has been processed. Back painted glass is a made-to-measure product built on such a substrate, and colour, sheen, edge treatment, drilled holes and every socket cut-out are fixed before the panel leaves the works. Silvered mirror glass is its nearest neighbour, rear coated and templated the same way and equally impossible to cut on site, but its deposited silver layer reads as a reflection where this cured opaque coat reads as colour.

Seeing colour through glass changes it. The substrate carries a tint of its own, so a coating that looks one way on a card looks different behind glass, and low-iron substrates are used where a colour must stay true, particularly with whites and pale greys. Whether the glass beneath the coating is annealed, heat treated or laminated is a separate decision governed by where the panel goes and what it may meet, and that decision belongs to a qualified professional rather than to a colour choice.

Colour is read through the glass, so the substrate's own tint, the coating sheen and the room's lighting all change what is actually seen. A sample viewed at full size under the intended light is the only reliable check.
Installation dependency
Panels are templated from the finished wall rather than from drawings, and every hole and cut-out is made before delivery. Once the panel is cured, and heat treated where applicable, it cannot be altered.
Substrate dependency
The wall behind must be flat, sound and able to take the adhesive or fixing method chosen, since a rigid glass panel bridges hollows and reveals them rather than following the background.
Moisture behaviour
Water reaching the rear face is the usual cause of trouble, so the perimeter joint, the adhesive and the wall behind matter more than the glass does. Wet-area use depends on the complete waterproofing strategy, which a qualified professional determines.
Repairability
There is no repair to a chipped edge or a scratched face; the panel is replaced. Keeping the template and the colour reference is what makes a later replacement practical at all.
Maintenance
The face is non-porous and wipes down readily, though gloss shows smears, and the perimeter sealant is the element most likely to need attention as the years pass.
Surface wear
The exposed surface is glass, so it takes marks quite differently from a painted wall, and hard particles caught in a cleaning cloth are the practical risk rather than everyday wiping.
