What clay flue liner is
A clay flue liner is a fired ceramic unit made to be built one on top of another to form a continuous lining inside a masonry chimney. Straight lengths are the bulk of it, with bends, offsets and starter units made to match. Most patterns have a socket at one end and a spigot at the other so that successive units register into each other, and the joint between them is made with a jointing material intended for that duty rather than with ordinary bedding mortar.
The lining exists because the inside of a flue and the outside of a chimney are two different environments. Combustion products carry moisture and acids, and when they cool they condense on whatever surface they meet. Fired clay is chosen because it is a dense ceramic that tolerates that chemistry and the heating and cooling cycles better than the masonry surrounding it does. Some liners are made with a smoother or glazed bore, and different clay bodies are produced for different duties, which is a matter for the manufacturer's own documentation and the appliance being installed.
The single most practical fact about the units is that they are built in as the stack rises, with the sockets facing upward so that anything running down the inside stays inside the liner rather than escaping into the surrounding masonry at every joint. That also means a liner cannot be added to a finished masonry stack without taking it apart. Lining an existing chimney is done with quite different products, and it is a separate subject from this one.
What the liner is not is the chimney. The stack around it is masonry with its own mortar, its own weathering, its own flashings and its own movement, and the two are deliberately allowed to behave independently. Whether an existing chimney has a sound lining, an old and damaged one, or none at all, makes it a different object to work on, and establishing which is the case is an inspection carried out by someone qualified to do it.
