What engineering brick is
Engineering bricks are clay units made from selected clays and fired hard, so that the finished body is denser and takes up markedly less water than most facing bricks. They are made for positions where absorption, rather than appearance, is the governing concern, and that single property is what defines the family.
Density is the whole point of the material. Where brickwork sits below the damp-proof course, forms a retaining face, caps a freestanding wall or is buried in ground that stays wet, a unit that soaks up little water behaves differently through freezing and thawing than an open-textured facing brick does.
The colour range is narrow compared with facing brick, typically running through reds and dark blue-greys with a smooth, close face. Some designers use that appearance deliberately at plinths, copings and thresholds, but selecting these units for looks alone means accepting a hard, dense brick that is unforgiving to cut and awkward to bond with softer neighbours.

- A dense, close-fired face weathers slowly and holds its colour, which can look conspicuous where it meets older, more open brickwork that has softened with age.
- Substrate dependency
- Where these units are built into or against existing masonry, the relative hardness of old and new becomes the issue, because the softer material is the one that takes the movement.
- Appearance
- The palette is narrow and the face is usually smooth and close. Used as a band, plinth or coping it reads as a deliberate change; used across an elevation it reads as a very different kind of wall.
- Installation dependency
- Low absorption changes how the mortar behaves against the unit, and dense bricks are harder to cut cleanly, so both the bedding and the cutting need allowing for in the programme.
- Repairability
- Individual units can be cut out and replaced, but matching an existing dense brick from an earlier production run is often difficult and the repair may read as a patch.

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.
- Using a dense unit below the damp-proof course does not replace the damp-proof course, which remains a separate part of the assembly.
- Where the units sit against retained ground, drainage behind the wall is part of the design and not a property of the brick.
- The mortar has to work with a low-absorption unit, so a mix used elsewhere on the job may not simply transfer.
- Junctions with softer masonry above need thinking through, because the two materials respond to movement differently.
- Where the brickwork is carrying load, its sizing and adequacy are engineering decisions for a qualified professional.

- Are spare units being retained, since matching later is often the harder half of any repair?
