Overview

What wood preservative is

A brush-applied wood preservative is a liquid treatment worked into the surface of timber on site to make the wood less hospitable to fungal decay and, in some formulations, to wood-boring insects. Some products are effectively colourless, others carry pigment, and some are combined with a water-repellent binder so that the treated surface also sheds water.

It differs fundamentally from preservative-treated timber, where the wood is loaded into a vessel and preservative is driven into the cell structure under pressure or vacuum. That process reaches a depth no brush can achieve. An applied preservative wets the outer fibres and whatever the liquid can reach through checks and end grain, so it is a surface measure and is not a substitute for factory treatment where treated timber is required.

The practical role that follows is retreatment. When treated timber is cut, drilled or notched, the exposed face is untreated wood, and a brushed preservative is the normal way of dealing with that exposure. The same applies to existing timber in service that cannot be replaced. In both cases the treatment is doing a limited, local job, and its limits are worth stating rather than assuming away.

Substrate dependency
Penetration depends on the timber. Dry, absorbent, freshly cut softwood takes far more than dense, oily or previously coated wood, and end grain draws in far more than a face does.
Moisture behaviour
Decay is driven by persistent wetting. A preservative addresses the timber's susceptibility rather than the water reaching it, so drainage, ventilation and detailing remain the primary defences.
Weathering and exposure
Exposure gradually depletes a surface treatment through washing and ultraviolet breakdown, which is why exterior timber is retreated periodically rather than treated once and forgotten.
Appearance
Products range from near-colourless to strongly pigmented. Pigment usually carries the visible weathering behaviour, so an invisible treatment and a coloured one do not look alike after a season outdoors.
Maintenance
Retreatment is the normal service model for this material. Whether the element can be reached, and what has to be moved to reach it, is worth settling before the design is fixed.
Documentation
Ask the manufacturer which organisms the product is documented against and which use situation it is intended for, because these products differ in scope more than their labels suggest.
Installation dependency
The result depends on the timber being clean, dry and absorbent when the work is done, and on every cut face being reached, including those made after the first treatment.

  • Does the element see strong sun, where pigment and binder break down more quickly?

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • Existing coatings, waxes and previous water repellents block absorption and normally have to be removed first.
  • Timber moisture content at the time of treatment governs how much liquid the wood can take up.
  • Fixings, brackets and connectors sit at the wettest points, and their compatibility with the treatment chemistry is a product-level question.
  • The design detail around the timber, including gaps, capping and drainage, does more for longevity than the coating.
  • Where the timber is structural, decay found during preparation is a matter for a qualified professional rather than a coating.

  • A colourless treatment leaves the timber to grey naturally, which is a deliberate outcome rather than a failure.
  • Pigmented treatments change tone board by board, because absorption varies across a batch.

  • Cuts made on site are the weak point, and they are usually made after the treatment has been done.
  • A surface treatment does not restore timber that has already lost section to decay.
  • Preservative treats the wood, not the design fault that is keeping the wood wet.
  • Fixings and connectors have their own compatibility considerations in treated timber.
  • Reaching the timber again in later years is often impossible once the element is built in.
