Overview
What timber decking boards is
Timber decking boards are sawn timber machined into boards for external walking surfaces. Faces may be smooth, ribbed or grooved, and boards are laid with a gap along every joint over a supporting frame of joists and bearers. Species range from treated construction softwood through naturally durable hardwoods to thermally modified timber, and each of those behaves differently outdoors.
It is worth separating this from preservative treated timber, which names a process rather than a product. Preservative treatment describes timber that has had preservative introduced into it, and the same treatment is applied to fence posts, battens, joists and framing. A decking board is a format: a profiled board sized and supported to be walked on. A board may be treated, naturally durable or modified, and the treatment alone says nothing about whether the section, the span or the fixing arrangement is right.
External exposure is what makes decking its own subject. Boards are wetted and dried repeatedly, bleached by sunlight and left to move freely, so they cup, twist and check as they age. The frame beneath has to drain and stay ventilated, cut ends and drilled holes are where decay usually starts, and the metal used for fixings has to be compatible with the treatment chemistry in the board, which is a question for the supplier rather than an assumption.

- Everything about an external deck is driven by wetting, drying and sunlight. Untreated surfaces silver, coatings break down where exposure is heaviest, and the sunlit edge of a deck ages differently from the shaded part of the same structure.
- Moisture behaviour
- Boards take up and release moisture continually, moving mainly across their width. Gaps between boards, ventilation beneath and free drainage below all exist to let that happen without holding water against the timber.
- Substrate dependency
- The frame under the boards is the part that determines how the deck behaves. Joist spacing, bearer support, ground preparation and drainage below govern deflection, movement and how long the structure stays sound.
- Surface wear
- Boards check, splinter and lose their profile edges over time, and grooved faces trap debris in a way smooth faces do not. Which face suits a given position is a matter for discussion with the supplier rather than a general rule.
- Maintenance
- Cleaning, clearing gaps and debris, and renewing any coating are ongoing tasks rather than occasional ones. What that involves follows from the species, from the finish applied and from the exposure of the particular position, since a shaded and overhung corner does not ask the same of an owner as a sunlit open edge of the same deck.
- Installation dependency
- Fixings, their metal and their position relative to board ends decide where splitting starts. Fixing metal has to be compatible with the treatment chemistry in the board, which is confirmed with the supplier rather than assumed.
- Appearance
- Timber decking changes colour markedly in its first period outdoors, and it does so unevenly where shade, run-off or planting affect one part of the deck more than another. Accepting that shift is part of choosing it.
