Overview

What concrete roof tiles is

Concrete roof tiles are made from a mix of cement, sand and pigment that is pressed or extruded into shape and then cured. There is no kiln firing, so the finished tile owes its colour to the pigment in the mix and, on many products, to a coating applied to the exposed face. That single difference in how colour is achieved lies behind most of the other differences from clay.

They are produced in profiles that echo older coverings: interlocking pantile and Roman shapes, bold rolled forms, and flatter units intended to read at a distance something like slate. Interlocking side channels mean that fewer units cover a roof plane than small plain tiles would. Matching ridge, hip, verge and eaves components are normally part of the same range.

Compared with fired clay of a comparable profile, concrete tiles tend to be heavier, which is why exchanging one covering for another on an existing roof is an engineering question rather than a straight swap. Weathering differs too. A surface pigment or coating tends to soften and lighten with time, and a whitish lime bloom can appear on new tiles before it gradually washes away.

Weathering and exposure
Lime bloom, a pale efflorescence, is common on newly laid concrete tiles and generally weathers away. Moss and lichen establish readily on damp and shaded planes, and the surface texture of the tile gives them something to hold on to.
Moisture behaviour
The covering sheds water down the slope rather than sealing the roof. Water that gets past the units in driving rain is the underlay's problem to carry away, which is why covering and underlay are specified as one decision.
Maintenance
Attention tends to focus on slipped units, vegetation growth on damp planes, blocked valleys and gutters, and the condition of any mortar bedding used at ridge or verge on older roofs.
