Overview

What natural slate roofing is

Roofing slate is a metamorphic rock formed from fine sediments under heat and pressure, a process that gives it a strong cleavage in one plane. Quarried blocks are split along that cleavage into thin sheets, dressed to size and holed for fixing. Nothing is added and nothing is fired: the roof covering is the rock itself, reduced to a workable thickness.

Because it is a natural product, slate varies. Colour, surface texture, thickness and the presence of mineral inclusions differ between sources and even between beds within one quarry. Some slates carry iron sulphide inclusions that can stain a roof or break down in exposure, which is among the things a qualified professional considers when a particular source is being discussed.

On the roof, slates are laid in courses with each unit overlapping the two courses below, fixed through pre-formed holes onto battens over an underlay. Sorting by thickness, so that the heavier slates sit low on the roof, is traditional practice. The closest sibling product, fibre cement slate, is a manufactured board of cement and reinforcing fibre pressed to a uniform rectangle: it borrows the format but it is not stone.

Appearance
Slate colour ranges from blue-grey and black through greens, purples and heathered mixtures depending on the source. Riven faces catch light unevenly, while sawn or machine-dressed edges give a crisper line than hand-dressed ones.
Weathering and exposure
Natural slate weathers slowly and unevenly, which is part of its appeal. Some slates develop a surface bloom or lighten in tone; others hold their colour. That behaviour is a property of the specific slate rather than of slate in general.
Moisture behaviour
Slates shed water down the slope in overlapping courses. Water that gets past them, driven by wind or held up by debris, becomes the underlay's problem, which is why the two layers are considered as a single decision.
Repairability
A single slate can be replaced using a slate hook or a tingle without stripping a wide area, which is one of the reasons slated roofs are so often repaired in stages rather than renewed all at once.
Substrate dependency

  • Slate is a natural product, so two roofs laid in nominally the same slate can look noticeably different from each other.
  • Fixings and flashings often reach the end of their useful condition well before the slate itself does.
  • Blending slates across the roof rather than working from one pack at a time avoids visible bands of colour.
  • The underlay beneath an old slate roof is frequently in far worse condition than the covering above it.
  • Fibre cement slate is a different product entirely, and comparing the two on appearance alone misses the point.
  • Reclaimed slate can be excellent or exhausted, and telling the difference is work for someone who knows what to look for.
