What dry stone walling is
Dry stone walling is stone construction without mortar. Stone is won, sorted and graded, then laid so that every piece beds on the stones below it and locks against its neighbours. Nothing is bonded, glued or cast. What holds the wall together is the bedding of each stone, the friction between them and the judgement of the person placing them, which is why this is described as a craft rather than as a material.
The traditional form has a pair of faces that lean inwards towards each other, with the space between them packed with smaller stone known as hearting, longer through stones set across the wall to tie the faces together, and a coping of stones along the top. The inward lean is called the batter. What a waller is actually building is that whole arrangement; the faces you can see are only its outside.
It shares its raw material with dressed-stone-blocks and its loose-stone look with gabion-walling, but it is neither of them. A gabion contains stone inside a wire basket that does the holding; a mortared wall relies on a binder to bed and bond the units. A dry stone wall has neither, so how high it goes, how it is founded, how far it leans and how it is tied are design questions for a qualified professional working alongside an experienced waller.
