Overview

What dressed stone blocks is

Dressed stone blocks are natural stone taken from a quarry and worked so that the faces and beds are squared. How far that working goes defines the terminology: ashlar is finely dressed and laid with close joints, while squared rubble is worked just enough to course and keeps a rougher face with wider joints.

The stone itself does most of the deciding. Sedimentary stones such as limestone and sandstone were laid down in beds, and a block should generally be built with those beds horizontal, as they lay in the ground. Stone set with its beds vertical, sometimes called face bedding, can delaminate and shed its face. Igneous stones such as granite have no bedding in the same sense and behave differently again.

Worked finishes range from sawn and rubbed faces, through tooled and punched textures, to a deliberately rough rock face, and the finish changes the character of an elevation as much as the stone does. Blocks are heavy, so handling, lifting and the capacity of whatever supports them are practical constraints from the outset, and the skills involved are those of a stonemason rather than a general bricklayer.

Appearance
Colour and figure vary within a quarry and between beds, so a delivery is judged as a whole rather than from a single sample, and blocks are often laid out and arranged before they are fixed.
Weathering and exposure
Stone weathers, and how it does so depends on the stone. Some limestones develop a patina and self-clean on washed faces while soiling in sheltered ones, producing the uneven appearance seen on older buildings.
Moisture behaviour
Natural stone takes up water, and the rate differs enormously between stones. Stone that is saturated and then freezes is where most decay begins, which is why exposed positions test a stone hardest.
Substrate dependency
Where stone is backed by other masonry or fixed to a frame, the backing, the ties and the support arrangement belong to the wall design, and matter more as the blocks get heavier.
Installation dependency
Bed orientation, joint width and the mortar all follow from the stone. The work is set out from the stone as delivered, and cutting on site changes the character of the face.
Repairability
Individual stones can be cut out and replaced, which is how stone buildings are kept going, but the replacement has to be compatible in geology as well as colour or it will decay at a different rate.
Maintenance
Cleaning stone is where a great deal of damage is done. Aggressive methods open the surface and accelerate decay, and what is appropriate depends entirely on the particular stone.
Documentation
Ask for the name of the stone and the quarry it came from, since that is what makes matching possible later and tells a specialist how the stone is likely to behave.

  • How exposed is this elevation, and does the stone chosen behave well when saturated and then frozen?
  • Is the site coastal, or does the stone face salts carried from roads and paths nearby?
  • Is the atmosphere polluted enough to affect the surface of a calcareous stone?
  • Are there horizontal surfaces, such as copings and cills, where water sits rather than running off?
  • Does the stone come from a climate broadly similar to the one it is being used in?

Assembly

Substrate and system dependencies

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • The weight of stone masonry has to be carried, and what supports it is a structural question from the outset.
  • Where stone faces a backing wall, the ties and cavity arrangements are part of the overall wall design.
  • The mortar must suit the stone, and is generally softer than the stone so that the joint takes the movement.
  • Damp-proof courses, flashings and cavity trays are still needed and are detailed around the stonework.
  • Fixings and cramps used to restrain larger units are components with their own material and corrosion considerations.

  • Ashlar with fine joints and squared rubble with wide joints produce completely different elevations from the same stone.
  • The worked finish, whether sawn, rubbed, tooled or rock faced, changes how light falls across the wall.
  • Natural variation between blocks is part of the material and is usually arranged deliberately rather than eliminated.
  • Mortar colour is chosen to sit with the stone, and a mismatched joint dominates a stone elevation.
  • New stone set beside weathered stone reads as new for a considerable time before the two draw together.

  • Which stone is this, and what is known about how it behaves in this particular climate?
  • Are the blocks being laid on their natural bed rather than face bedded?
  • How is water kept from sitting on horizontal surfaces and running down the face of the wall?
  • Is the mortar softer than the stone, so that the joint is the sacrificial part of the wall?
  • For repairs, is the replacement stone compatible with what is already in the wall?

Upkeep

Maintenance and repair considerations

  • What cleaning is appropriate for this stone, and who has advised on the method?
  • How will pointing be maintained, and what mortar suits this stone?
  • Are spare blocks and the quarry details being kept for the sake of future repairs?
  • Is there a plan for inspecting copings, cills and parapets, which weather hardest of all?
  • How would decayed stone be dealt with, and is piecing in or full replacement appropriate here?

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.

  • Handling and lifting are planned before delivery, because the blocks are heavy and access often decides the method.
  • Blocks are usually laid out and arranged for colour and figure before any of them are fixed.
  • The mortar is chosen for the stone, and lime-based mixes are common with the softer stones.
  • New work needs protecting from rain, from frost and from staining by other trades on site.
  • The work is carried out by masons whose skills are specific to stone rather than to brickwork.

Blind spots

Commonly overlooked points

  • Face bedding is one of the commonest causes of stone shedding its surface, and it is invisible once the wall is built.
  • Two stones that look alike can behave very differently, and mixing them in one wall shows up over time.
  • Weight drives the whole exercise, from lifting on site to what the structure below has to carry.
  • Cleaning does more harm to historic stonework than almost anything else that is done to it.
  • Lead times for quarried and worked stone are long, and specials take longer still to obtain.
  • The mortar joint is the part meant to give way, and hard pointing transfers decay into the stone.
