What gabion walling is
Gabion walling is built from wire mesh cages, either welded panel baskets or woven mesh, which are placed in position, filled with stone and then closed. Stacked and tied to one another, the filled cages form a wall whose mass and internal friction do the work, with the mesh containing the stone rather than acting as the wall on its own.
It belongs mostly to external works and landscape. Common uses are retaining ground on sloping sites, forming boundaries and screens, making planters and seating, facing embankments, and dealing with erosion beside watercourses. Because the fill is loose stone, the structure drains freely, and that is one of the main reasons it is turned to for retaining work.
Two things govern the result. The mesh has to survive the environment it sits in, which is why coated and stainless options exist and why coastal and aggressive settings need thought. And the fill has to be durable angular stone larger than the mesh opening, hand packed at the visible faces if the wall is to look deliberate rather than tipped. Filled cages settle, so bracing wires and careful packing are what keep the faces from bellying outwards.
