Overview

What terracotta tile is

Terracotta is fired clay left unglazed, so the body of the tile is the visible surface. It is traditionally made by pressing or extruding local clays and firing them at relatively low temperatures, which leaves an open, porous body and the warm red, orange and buff colours that come from iron in the clay itself.

Because there is no glaze, the finished surface is created after laying rather than in the factory. Terracotta floors are normally given a surface treatment once installed, and it is that treatment, rather than the tile, which is maintained over the years. Quarry tile is a related unglazed clay product, extruded and fired harder, with a denser body and a far more uniform appearance.

Handmade terracotta varies in size, thickness, colour and flatness, and often shows the marks of its making. That irregularity is the reason people choose it and also the reason it takes longer to lay. The surface is a living one: it darkens, marks and picks up a patina from use, so the appearance at completion is not the appearance in later years.

Moisture behaviour
The body is open and takes up water readily, which is why the treatment applied after laying, and whatever sits below the tile, both matter so much. This is the property that most separates terracotta from a dense porcelain.
Appearance
Colour comes from the clay itself and varies within and between batches. Handmade tiles differ in size and face, so joint widths vary and the floor reads as a made thing rather than a manufactured one.
Maintenance
The surface treatment is the element being maintained. It wears along traffic lines and is topped up over time, and the products and intervals depend on the treatment chosen and on the supplier's guidance.
Surface wear
Unglazed clay wears by abrading and darkening rather than by losing a glaze, so worn areas tend to blend into the floor instead of standing out as obvious scars.
Substrate dependency
A porous tile is affected by moisture arriving from below as much as from above, so the base and any layers controlling damp beneath it are part of the discussion from the start.
Repairability
Individual tiles can be replaced, but a new tile set into an aged floor stands out until it has been treated and walked on for a considerable time.

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • Damp arriving from below affects a porous tile and anything applied to its surface.
  • The base must be flat and stable, and irregular tiles make lippage harder to control.
  • Movement provision through the field and at the perimeters is a design matter for others.
  • Bedding practice for thick, irregular tiles differs from that for calibrated factory tiles.
  • Where the floor meets doors and thresholds, the build-up height needs planning early.

  • Colour varies within a batch, so blending across the whole delivery is normal practice.
  • The treatment applied after laying changes the colour, usually darkening and enriching it.

  • What treatment does the supplier advise for this tile, and who will apply it?
  • How is that treatment renewed later, and how disruptive is the process?
  • How should everyday cleaning be done so that the treatment is not stripped away?
  • Are spare tiles from the same firing being kept somewhere safe and dry?

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.

  • Tiles are often conditioned before laying, and that is the installer's judgement for the product.
  • Size variation means the setting out cannot rely on a constant joint width across the floor.
  • Any treatment is normally applied once the floor has dried out, which affects the programme.
  • Grout residue is difficult to remove from an untreated porous face, so sequencing matters.

  • Handmade tiles take considerably longer to lay than calibrated machine-made ones.
  • Grout haze on an untreated porous face can be very difficult to remove afterwards.
