Encaustic Cement Tile (Hydraulically Pressed Tile)

How a hydraulically pressed cement tile differs from a fired ceramic tile of similar appearance, and what its porous, alkaline body means for sealing, grouting and daily use.

Overview

What encaustic cement tile is

An encaustic cement tile is made by pressing a face layer of white cement, mineral pigment and fine aggregate onto a coarser cement and sand backing inside a mould. The pattern is formed by a thin metal divider that keeps the coloured mixes apart while the face layer is poured in by hand. The pressed tile is then cured with water and air. It never enters a kiln.

That is the whole distinction from a printed ceramic tile carrying the same patterns. A ceramic tile holds its decoration in a fired glaze over a fired body, so the surface is closed and the pattern is effectively a skin. A cement tile holds its pattern in a pigmented layer of the body itself, and that body stays porous and chemically alkaline. Colour therefore runs deeper than a glaze does, but the surface takes up water, oil and pigment from whatever is left standing on it until it has been treated.

Because the tile is cured rather than fired, it also marks and moves differently. Fresh tiles can carry residual moisture and free lime, faces are not perfectly flat, and acidic cleaners attack the cement matrix in a way they never attack a glaze. Treating the tile before grouting and again afterwards is normal practice, and the treatment used, the grout chosen and the cleaning regime all have to be taken from the specific manufacturer's instructions rather than assumed.

Moisture behaviour
The body is porous and stays chemically alkaline, so it takes up water, oil and coloured liquids, and it can still hold curing moisture and free lime when delivered. Efflorescence and darkening after wetting are ordinary behaviour for the material rather than evidence of a fault.
Appearance
Colour is mineral pigment held in a pressed face layer, so tones shift between batches and within a single pack, and the face is not perfectly flat. The pattern is read across a whole area, which is why one loose tile makes a poor sample.
Surface wear
Wear takes down the surface of the face layer rather than breaking a glaze, so traffic routes gradually change sheen and colour depth instead of exposing a different material underneath.
Maintenance
Acids dissolve the cement matrix that binds the pigment and strong alkalis attack it as well, so harm from the wrong product is a change in the body rather than a mark on a glaze, and abrasion dulls the pressed face. Which products the maker accepts is set out in its own aftercare sheet.
Installation dependency
Handling, setting out and treatment sequence all differ from fired tile. Tiles are normally protected before grouting so that grout pigment does not enter the open face, and adhesive and grout colours are chosen with staining in mind.
Repairability
The face layer has real depth, so light marking can sometimes be abraded out and the surface treated again by a specialist. Replacing single tiles is harder, because a later production run rarely matches the original.

Ask the manufacturer for the treatment sequence it requires, the products it accepts, its position on grout choice and its own statement about where the tile is offered for use.

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • The tile needs a stable and plane substrate, because a variable-thickness unit magnifies any deviation beneath it.
  • Adhesive choice interacts with the tile's porosity and with the colour the finished floor ends up reading.
  • Movement provision in the background and in the tiled surface is designed by a qualified professional, not assumed.
  • Any waterproofing belongs to a separate system that has to be compatible with both the adhesive and the tile.
  • Where the floor meets a different finish, the change in thickness has to be resolved with a deliberate transition detail.
  • Curing moisture in a new screed affects both the adhesive and the tile, and has to be assessed before laying begins.

  • Treatment of the surface can deepen the colour slightly, and how much depends on the product used.

  • Grout colour alters the pattern more here than on a glazed tile, because the joints are wider and the face is matt.

  • What traffic and grit will this floor take, and is there matting at the entrance to catch it?
  • How quickly will a patina develop, and is that acceptable to everyone who will use the room?
  • What happens when a spill is not dealt with promptly, and can the resulting mark be removed?
  • How will the treated surface be monitored so that it is renewed before staining starts?

  • Which cleaning products has the manufacturer confirmed as acceptable for this particular tile?
  • Who will carry out re-treatment, and how is the need for it going to be identified?
  • Are spare tiles from the same production run being kept for later repairs?

  • How will the floor be protected during any later building work in the house?
  • What does the manufacturer say about steam cleaning and about machine scrubbing?

  • Patterned layouts consume more material than plain fields, and cut units cannot always be used elsewhere.
  • Hand pressing leaves the arris slightly soft, so joints read wider than the spacer size suggests.
  • The alkaline body reacts with the acidic descalers that many households already keep for limescale.
