Overview

What tile adhesive and grout is

Tile adhesive is the bedding material that bonds a tile to its background. Most are cement-based powders gauged with water or with a polymer liquid, and there are also ready-mixed dispersion adhesives and reaction-resin types. They differ in how they grip, how much movement they can accommodate, how quickly they set, and which backgrounds and tiles they are formulated for.

Grout fills the joints between tiles once the bedding has set. Cement-based grouts are the common family, while resin-based grouts behave differently and are used where other jointing properties are wanted. Grout colour has a very large effect on how a tiled surface reads, because in most tiling the joints form a continuous grid across the entire area.

The point that matters most is this: grout is not a layer that keeps water out. Cement-based grout is a porous material, the joints are numerous, and water passes through and around it. Where water has to be controlled, that is done by a separate designed layer behind the tiling and by flexible sealant at movement junctions, never by the grout itself.

Moisture behaviour
Cement-based grout is porous and its joints are numerous, so water moves through and around it. Control of water in a wet area is achieved by a separate designed layer, not by the grouting between tiles.
Installation dependency
Mixing, open time, coverage behind the tile and the timing of grouting all affect the result, and they vary between products, which is why the installer works to the specific product's instructions.
Substrate dependency
The background governs the choice. A cement screed, a boarded wall, an existing tiled surface and a heated floor each impose different requirements on the bedding material used.
Maintenance
Joints are the part of a tiled surface that shows age first. Discolouration, hairline cracking at junctions and failed sealant lines are the routine issues, rather than anything happening to the tiles.
Repairability
Joints can be raked out and re-grouted and sealant lines renewed, which is why so much of the upkeep of a tiled room turns out to be joint work rather than tile work.
Appearance
Joint colour and width change the perceived scale and busyness of a tiled surface, sometimes more than the tile choice does, and a made-up sample board is the reliable way to judge it.
Documentation
Adhesives and grouts are formulated products, so only the maker's data sheet describes which background, which tile and which conditions each one is intended for.

  • Is the area outdoors, where cycles of wetting and freezing both apply?

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • The bedding has to suit both the background and the tile, and those are two separate checks.
  • Backgrounds that are still drying, dusty or contaminated affect how well anything bonds.
  • Tiling over existing tiling changes what the bedding is being asked to bond to.
  • Movement in the background is accommodated by the design of the joints, not by the grout alone.
  • Coverage of bedding behind the tile influences hollow spots, edge chipping and later failure.

Appearance

  • Joint colour changes the character of a tiled area more than most owners expect it to.
  • Light grouts show dirt and dark grouts show limescale, each in their own way.
  • Joint width has to suit the tiles, since irregular tiles cannot be laid with fine joints.
  • Sealant at junctions rarely matches grout colour exactly, and that difference is visible.
  • A grouted sample board is the reliable way to judge a joint colour before committing to it.

  • Can the joints be raked out and renewed later without damaging the tiles?
  • When would the sealant lines be expected to need renewing in this room?
  • Who should be called if the joints crack repeatedly in the same place?

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.

  • Products are mixed and used within times set by their makers, which shapes how the work runs.
  • Grouting normally follows once the bedding has developed enough strength, on the product's terms.
  • Junctions and changes of plane are usually formed in flexible sealant rather than rigid grout.
  • Residue has to be removed from the tile face before the grout has hardened on it.
  • Site temperature and background conditions both affect how these products behave.
