What polished plaster is
Polished plaster is a decorative surface built up from very thin mineral layers - traditionally lime with fine marble dust or a similar aggregate - which are compressed and burnished with a trowel until the surface takes on depth and sheen. The material itself is thin. Almost everything you see in the finished wall is the way it was worked.
It sits apart from the other plasters in this category because it is not doing a levelling job. The background has already been made flat by something else, and polished plaster is the decorative layer on top. That makes background preparation unusually critical: a thin burnished layer hides nothing and can even exaggerate what is underneath it.
Because so much depends on the hand applying it, two walls in the same product by two applicators will not look the same. This is a craft finish. Choosing the applicator, and agreeing samples made by that applicator in the room's own light, is a more meaningful decision than choosing between competing products.

- Installation dependency
- Skill dominates the outcome. The same tub of material yields very different walls depending on how it is laid, compressed and burnished, which is why the applicator is the more important selection to get right.
- Substrate dependency
- The background does the levelling; the plaster only decorates. Any hollow, joint line or change of suction in what lies beneath is likely to show through a thin burnished layer.
- Appearance
- Depth, movement and sheen vary by product family and by working technique, from an almost stone-like matt to something close to a mirror polish. These are not adjustable after the event.
- Repairability
- Localised repair is difficult because the surface is continuous and hand-worked. Repairs are usually taken out to a natural break, and even then a difference in colour or sheen is possible.
- Maintenance
- Surfaces are often sealed or waxed to suit their location, and that treatment has its own upkeep. What is used, and how often, should come from the applicator and the product documentation.
- Moisture behaviour
- Some systems are presented as suited to damp-prone rooms and some are not. That is a product-specific and assembly-specific matter for the manufacturer's documentation and a qualified professional.
- Surface wear
- A burnished face shows scuffs and dulling in a way a matt painted wall does not, particularly at hand height and along routes people walk every day.

- The background is prepared, primed and made flat before any decorative layer is considered.
- Changes of background material behind the finish can telegraph through as visible lines.
- Suction differences across a wall affect how the layers pull and how they burnish.
- Movement at junctions and around openings is a common source of later cracking.
- Edges, arrises and terminations need a decided detail, since there is no trim to hide behind.

- Samples must be made by the applicator who will do the work, not taken from a display board.
- The degree of sheen changes the whole character and should be agreed in words and in sample form.
- Colour depth builds through the layers, so a flat colour chip is a poor guide to the result.
- Directional trowel movement is visible and is part of the design conversation.
- Adjacent surfaces read differently, so the boundary with paint or tiling is a design decision.
- Lighting position exaggerates or calms the movement in the finished surface.
