Overview

What gypsum plaster is

Gypsum plaster is a wet-applied material based on calcined gypsum, mixed with water on site and worked onto a background with a trowel. Unlike plasterboard, which arrives flat, gypsum plaster takes its flatness from the plasterer's hand and from the background beneath. It sets by chemical reaction rather than by drying alone, and that set is comparatively fast.

Products are usually split between undercoat plasters, which build out and straighten a background, and finish plasters, which give the smooth closed surface that gets decorated. Undercoats are formulated for the background they go on, since masonry of different suctions behaves differently, while finish plasters are formulated to be worked to a polished face.

Compared with lime plaster, gypsum sets faster, ends up harder and is far less open to water vapour. That combination is why it is normally treated as an internal material on dry backgrounds, and why applying it over soft, damp-prone or historic backgrounds is a decision that should involve a qualified professional.

Substrate dependency
Background suction governs almost everything. A thirsty block pulls water out of the plaster before it can be worked, while a sealed surface holds it back; controlling suction is the plasterer's first problem, not an afterthought.
Moisture behaviour
Gypsum is comparatively closed to water vapour and does not enjoy staying wet. On walls where moisture needs to move through the surface, that is a limitation, and a qualified professional should be involved in the choice.
Appearance
A finish plaster is worked to a dense, slightly polished face. That face is flatter and harder than most alternatives, which is exactly why any hollow, ripple or trowel mark shows once light rakes across it.
Repairability
Patches join new plaster to old, and the join is usually visible until decorated. Matching an existing surface texture across a large wall is harder than most people expect it to be.
Installation dependency
Set behaviour is governed by the product and by conditions on site. Warm draughts, direct heat or a cold background all change how the material behaves under the trowel and how it looks afterwards.
Maintenance
Once decorated, the plaster itself needs little attention, but the decoration over it does, and repeated repainting slowly softens the crispness of arrises, cornices and mouldings.
Documentation
Undercoat and finish plasters are formulated for different backgrounds and different jobs. The product data sheet says which is which, and that record is worth keeping for future work.

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • Different backgrounds - board, brick, block, concrete - each need a different approach and often a different product.
  • Junctions between dissimilar backgrounds are where cracking concentrates and may need reinforcement.
  • Beads and stops define arrises and edges, and they are fixed before plastering rather than after.
  • Where a background moves or is likely to move, the finish will show it however well it is applied.
  • Any previous coatings on the wall change adhesion and have to be dealt with before work starts.

Appearance and finish considerations

  • Finish plaster reads as a single continuous surface, so joints and repairs stand out more than on taped work.
  • Grazing light along a wall exposes flatness in a way that overhead light simply does not.
  • The natural colour of fresh plaster is not the finished colour; decoration changes it completely.
  • Very flat and sheenier decorative finishes need a flatter background beneath them than matt ones do.
  • Deliberately textured looks are a different craft from a flat skim and are agreed in advance.

  • Is this wall in a route where knocks and trolley damage are likely to happen?
  • How will external corners and window reveals be protected in everyday use?
  • Is any structural movement expected behind the finish, and has that been discussed?
  • What happens to this finish if the wall gets wet from a leak somewhere above?
  • Has the choice of plaster been matched to how hard the room will actually be used?

Upkeep

Maintenance and repair considerations

  • Who will make good after fixings, sockets or shelves are added later on?
  • Will a repair be blended into the wall or taken to a corner to hide the change?
  • Is the same finish plaster being kept for touch-ups, or will a different product be used?
  • How long will the wall be left before it is decorated, and who decides that?
  • If a hairline crack appears at a junction, what is the agreed response?

Installation

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.

  • Background preparation, including dust removal and suction control, comes before any mixing.
  • Site conditions such as temperature, draughts and ventilation change how the material works.
  • Beads, stops and reinforcement are positioned before the wall is plastered, not afterwards.
  • Clean water and clean tools matter, because contamination affects how the material sets.
  • Following trades need to stay off the wall until the plasterer says it is ready.

Commonly overlooked points

  • Most complaints about a skimmed wall are really about the background or the drying conditions.
  • A wall that felt flat to the hand can still look uneven once a light is fitted close to it.
  • Old paint, adhesive residue or dust left on the background quietly undermines adhesion.
  • Decorating too soon over fresh plaster changes how the paint behaves and how it looks.
  • Gypsum and lime are not interchangeable, and swapping one for the other on an old wall causes problems.
