Overview
What a root barrier is
A root barrier is placed between planting and construction to stop roots reaching it. Roots follow moisture and will exploit any joint, lap or small defect, and they apply force over years rather than instantly.
It is a distinct element because resisting roots is not the same as resisting water. A membrane can be entirely watertight and still be penetrated by a root that finds an unbonded lap, which is why root resistance is specified separately.

- It is not waterproofing, although many waterproofing systems are also root-resistant. Resistance to roots is a separate property that has to be established.
