Overview
What epdm roofing membrane is
EPDM is a synthetic rubber, ethylene propylene diene monomer, produced as a flexible sheet that has been cured so that it stays elastic and cannot be softened again by heat. It is supplied in rolls and, for smaller roofs, in sheets wide enough that a whole plane can often be covered by a single piece with no seam in the field at all.
That is the characteristic which separates it from the other single plies. Where seams are needed they are made with a contact adhesive or with a purpose-made seam tape, after cleaning and priming the mating faces, and the joint relies on that bond rather than on the two sheets being fused into one another. A properly made adhesive seam is not easy to judge by eye, which is why the care taken at seams matters so much here.
The sheet is secured to what lies beneath by being fully bonded, by being held at defined positions, or by being loose laid under a ballast or a covering layer, and which of those is appropriate is a design decision rather than a preference. Chemistry matters too: EPDM is affected by contact with bitumen-based products and by some oils and solvents, so compatibility with anything it will touch is checked against the manufacturer's documentation.

- Water is shed across an unbroken sheet in the field, so the pressure falls instead on the seams, the upstands and the outlets. Whether the finished roof keeps water out of the building is a property of those details and of the assembly as a whole.
- Repairability
- Damage is usually dealt with by cleaning back the surface and bonding a patch of the same material over it using the manufacturer's adhesive or tape system. Old and weathered surfaces need more preparation before anything will bond to them reliably.
