Overview

What a engineered fill is

Engineered fill is ground that has been built rather than found. Material is placed in layers and compacted so that the resulting body has properties that are known, rather than properties that have to be discovered.

It appears wherever levels have to be raised, where unsuitable material has been dug out and replaced, or where a working platform is needed. What makes it 'engineered' is the control over placement and compaction, not the material itself.

  • It is not made ground in the general sense. Uncontrolled fill from earlier site use has unknown properties and is often the reason engineered fill is needed in the first place.
  • It is not a sub-base. A sub-base is a specific load-spreading layer directly beneath a pavement or slab; engineered fill is the broader body of placed ground that may sit beneath it.
  • It is not a subgrade, because a subgrade is characterised and a fill is constructed to a defined regime.
