Overview

What a sub-base is

A sub-base is a compacted granular layer built between the prepared ground and a slab, pavement or hardstanding. Its job is to take a concentrated load from above and deliver it to the ground below spread over a larger area, so that the ground is loaded within what it can accept.

It also commonly does secondary work: providing a working platform during construction, and allowing water to move rather than accumulate at a level where it would cause problems.

  • It is not engineered fill. Fill raises or replaces ground; a sub-base is a specific structural layer immediately beneath the construction it serves.

  • It is not a blinding. A blinding protects a surface and carries nothing; a sub-base exists precisely to carry and distribute.
