Overview

What a capping is

A capping layer sits between a weak subgrade and the sub-base above it. It is introduced when the ground will not support construction of the sub-base directly, either because it is too soft to compact against or because the loads would be delivered to it too concentrated.

It is therefore a conditional element: build-ups on competent ground do not have one, and its presence is a statement about the ground rather than about the pavement.

  • It is not a sub-base, and the two are not interchangeable. A sub-base is designed for the loading above; a capping is designed for the weakness below, and a build-up may contain both.
  • It is not engineered fill, although both are placed layers. A capping has a defined position immediately beneath the sub-base and a defined purpose; fill is the broader body of placed ground.
  • It is not a separation geotextile, though the two are commonly used together for related reasons.

  • That capping and sub-base are the same layer under two names. They answer different problems and are commonly both present.
  • That adding capping resolves poor ground. It makes construction possible over it; the ground's long-term behaviour is a separate question.
