1.What the test is actually being asked
Understanding the question makes the rest of the arrangements make sense. These prompts are about the shape of it rather than the method.
Write down that the test is examining the ground rather than any structure, since the ground is what does the accepting.
Everything that is eventually built around the result is designed around what the ground does, not the other way round.
Note that the useful question is how quickly the ground recovers between events rather than how much anything holds.
A larger void does not substitute for ground that accepts water slowly, so the recovery question is the one that governs.
Ask what the result would decide, including whether an infiltration approach is available here at all and what follows if it is not.
Understanding that an unfavourable result redirects rather than ends the design makes the whole exercise easier to approach.
Note that a general description of the soil in the area does not substitute for testing on this site, and record that as the reason for the visit.
Ground varies over short distances, and an account of a soil type is not an account of what this plot will accept.
Establish who will use the result, whether a designer, a body considering an enquiry, or both, and what form each needs it in.
A result produced for one purpose is sometimes not in the form another needs, which is worth settling before the visit.
Establish whether you or your designer is arranging the testing, and who is responsible for briefing whoever carries it out.
Testing arranged without a brief tends to happen in the most convenient position rather than the relevant one.
2.Access, plant and what has to be arranged
A testing visit is a site visit with machinery. These are the practical arrangements that decide whether it can happen at all.
Ask what plant or equipment would come onto the site, how it arrives and what route it needs to reach the test positions.
The answer decides whether the positions the designer wants are actually reachable, which is better known before the day.
Walk the route the equipment would take and note what it crosses, including lawn, planting, a surface or anything holding a level.
This is exactly the same conversation as any other vehicle on soft ground, and it is worth having before the visit.
Where equipment would cross ground above or beside a retaining structure, raise it before the visit rather than on the day.
Establish what is buried where testing is proposed, and tell whoever is arranging the visit what you know and what you do not.
Testing involves opening the ground, and the owner frequently holds information nobody has thought to ask for.
Establish the position of buried services and drainage with the relevant providers before any ground is opened for testing.
Ask whether water has to be supplied on site for the testing, where it would come from and who arranges it.
It is a straightforward practical requirement and one that regularly delays a visit because nobody raised it.
Ask whether somebody needs to be present, for how long, and whether access to the property is needed during the visit.
Testing can run over a period rather than an hour, and knowing that in advance avoids a wasted day.
Note whether any of the testing positions are near a boundary, and whether a neighbour should be told about the visit in advance.
Machinery in a garden near a boundary is much better mentioned beforehand than explained afterwards.
3.Positions and the level tested
Where and at what level are the two details that separate a test that means something from one that does not.
Ask where the testing will be carried out relative to the position where any infiltration structure is actually proposed to go.
A favourable result from the wrong position reads identically to a useful one, which is why the question is asked in this form.
Ask at what level relative to the proposed structure the testing is done, rather than assuming the nearest surface is tested.
The relevant layer is the one the structure would actually sit in, which may be some way below the surface.
Ask how many positions will be tested across the plot, who decided that number, and what informed the choice of each one.
Ground varies across a plot, and one hole describes one place rather than a garden.
Ask what would happen if the positions give very different results, and how that would be handled in the design.
Variation is common and is itself informative, provided somebody records the difference rather than averaging it away.
Ask for the positions to be recorded on a plan and photographed, so they can be related to whatever is later built.
A result whose position has been lost cannot be used by anybody designing something in a different part of the plot.
Photograph each of the positions yourself before they are reinstated, with something permanent included in the frame to give a fixed reference.
Your own record is independent of whether anybody else's report reaches you, and it takes a minute to make.
4.Season, groundwater and what one hole does not settle
A test describes the ground at a moment. These prompts are about the difference between that and the whole year.
Ask what season the testing is being done in, and what that means for how the result should be read.
A result taken in dry weather describes the ground at that moment, which is useful and incomplete at the same time.
Ask whether the seasonal range of groundwater has been established, and whether that is a separate exercise from this testing.
Ground that fills from below stops accepting at exactly the moment the arrangement is needed, and that is a different question.
Ask whether any proposed structure would sit clear of the seasonal high groundwater level, and who is responsible for establishing that.
It is one of the published questions worth putting directly, and it is not answered by a favourable test alone.
Ask whether testing at a different time of year would give a more useful answer, and what the consequences of waiting would be.
Timing is one of the few variables an owner controls, and it is rarely presented as a choice unless asked about.
Record that one favourable result in one position in one season does not describe the whole plot or the whole year.
Writing this down is what stops a single encouraging result being carried forward as though it settled everything.
5.Reinstatement and what is left behind
Testing opens the ground in a garden. What happens afterwards is worth agreeing before rather than after.
Ask what the testing leaves behind, how each opening is backfilled, and whether the surface above it is made good afterwards.
Reinstatement after testing is frequently outside the scope everybody assumed, which is discovered on the day.
Ask what happens to material taken out of the ground, whether it leaves the site and where it stands in the meantime.
Excavated material has to go somewhere, and in a domestic garden it usually stands on something else.
Where testing is in a paved or surfaced area, ask what reinstating that surface involves and who is responsible for it.
Opening a surface is a different proposition from opening a lawn, and the reinstatement standard is worth agreeing in advance.
Photograph each test area before the visit and again afterwards, so the state of the ground is recorded on both sides of it.
It is the same paired-record discipline that works for any other work in a garden, and it costs nothing.
Ask what the backfilled positions are likely to do over the following seasons, and note where they are so you can watch them.
Backfill rarely behaves as the ground around it does, and knowing where the positions were is what makes any later settlement explicable.
Ask whether anything at all is left in the ground after testing is finished, and record its position carefully if anything is.
Anything left in place becomes an unknown for the next person to dig there unless it is written down now.
6.What you should be holding when they leave
The visit produces a record, and the record is the only durable outcome. It is worth agreeing what it will contain.
Agree before the visit what you will receive afterwards, in what form and by when, rather than asking once the team has gone.
A record agreed in advance is produced; a record requested afterwards is negotiated.
Ask that the record states where each position was on the plot and at what level the testing at each one was carried out.
Those two details are what make a result usable by anybody who was not standing there on the day.
Ask that the record states the date, the season and what the weather had been doing in the period before the visit.
A result without its conditions cannot be read properly, particularly when it is picked up again some years later.
Ask for a description of what was actually found in the ground at each position, not only the outcome of the testing.
What the ground consists of at each depth is often as useful to a later designer as the result itself.
Pass the whole record to whoever is designing the arrangement rather than a summary, and keep a copy yourself.
Summaries lose the position, the level and the conditions, which are the three things that make a result meaningful.
Keep the record with the property paperwork, since it explains why the arrangement was designed the way it was.
A future owner faced with a flooded garden has three quite different possible problems, and this record helps separate them.
7.What a favourable result does not settle
A result showing that the ground accepts water answers one question and leaves several others entirely open.
Note that a favourable result does not establish that water may be discharged to the ground here, which is a separate enquiry.
Whether the ground can and whether it may are two different questions answered by two different people.
Discharge to ground is subject to consent arrangements determined by the relevant authority; confirm locally.
Note that it does not settle where the structure may sit relative to foundations, walls, slopes, boundaries or buried services.
The arrangement deliberately wets the ground around it, which makes its position a matter for structural and geotechnical advice.
Separation from foundations, walls, slopes, boundaries and services is settled with structural and geotechnical advisers, not by layout convenience.
Note that it does not describe the seasonal high groundwater level, which is a separate question established by separate investigation.
Two different questions about water in the ground are easily conflated, and only one of them is answered by this testing.
Ask what happens to the ability of the ground to accept water over the life of the arrangement, and what affects it.
The surface that accepts water is the one part of the arrangement that cannot be cleaned or seen without excavation.
Ask what is intended to stop sediment reaching the arrangement and who would be responsible for emptying whatever does that.
What intercepts sediment is what decides how long a favourable result stays relevant, so it belongs in the same conversation.
Ask what the design would become if the ground accepts less than assumed, so the alternative is understood before the result arrives.
Knowing the alternatives in advance turns an unfavourable result into a redirection rather than a setback.

Having these to hand usually makes the first conversation shorter and more useful.
- A plan of the plot marking where any infiltration structure is proposed
- Whatever is known about services, drainage and covers in the test areas
- Any earlier ground investigation report held for the property
- Your own photographs of each test position either side of the visit
- The written record produced after the testing, with positions and levels
- Any answers already received about whether discharge to ground is permitted
Records
Decisions to record before work begins
Write these down in your own words, with the date, so everyone is working from the same version.
- Who is arranging the testing and who is briefing whoever carries it out
- Where the test positions are and at what level testing is done
- What season the testing takes place in, and whether waiting was considered
- What reinstatement is agreed and who is responsible for it
- What record you will receive afterwards, in what form and by when
- What the design would become if the ground accepts less than assumed
Professional review
Questions to discuss with qualified professionals
Bring these to the relevant qualified professional, supplier or authority. Requirements vary by project and location.
- Where will the testing be carried out relative to the proposed structure?
- At what level will it be carried out, and why that level?
- How many positions will be tested, and what if the results differ?
- What season is this, and would a different time of year tell us more?
- Has the seasonal range of groundwater been established, or is that separate?
- What access and equipment does the visit need, and what do I arrange?
- What reinstatement is included, and what is left behind afterwards?
- What record will I hold afterwards, and what will it say about position and level?
