Reading Failure in an External Surface

That makes reading an external surface a matter of tracing a visible pattern back to the layer producing it. Each construction has its own repertoire of patterns, because each fails in the way its mechanism allows, and the same symptom can mean different things on an unbound field and on a bound one.

The observation that changes what you look at

Granular layers rarely fail suddenly. They lose stiffness as fines accumulate and as repeated loading works particles apart, so deterioration is progressive and the mechanism has been running for a long period before anything becomes visible at the surface.

Why a local depression is usually a local cause

The separation layer earns its place only where it is continuous. Wherever it is torn, stopped short or lapped against the direction of water movement, fines migrate into the granular layer at that point alone and stiffness is lost in a patch rather than everywhere.

So a foundation defect frequently shows as a local depression because the mechanism itself is local. Where a softer length of formation runs beneath, the same granular course bends into it and the settlement traces a weakness nobody can see.

The same ground, two different reports

Ground that would merely settle beneath unbound paving is ground that cracks a bound one, and the entries say the difference is not visible until it happens. A stiff pavement conceals poor ground right up to the point where it conceals it no longer.

In bound paving, water entering a crack cannot drain away: it sits on the base, saturates the bed from below, weakens the bond and freezes wherever the climate allows, so debonding spreads outward from the crack as units on either side lose their support.

Where the edges and the ironwork come in

Paving failures very commonly begin at unrestrained edges and progress inward, and the edge of a drive takes wheel loads at their most concentrated, commonly with the wheel partly off the paving.

Fixed objects produce their own pattern. Anything cast into or fixed through the field becomes a hard point in a construction that relies on being able to shuffle, so the units around drainage furniture and covers are the ones most often found rocking, and on a bound surface corners of fixed frames are where cracks start.

Observing by more than eye
