What wood wool board is
Wood wool cement board is made by shredding softwood into long, fine strands, coating them with a cement or magnesite binder and pressing them lightly into a panel. The strands remain visible and only partly bonded to one another, so the finished board is open and coarse rather than closed and flat, with a texture that reads clearly from right across a room.
This is precisely why it is not the same product as cement bonded particle board, with which it is regularly confused. That material uses fine wood particles compacted hard with cement into a dense, smooth, heavy sheet used as a substrate. Wood wool board is comparatively light and soft, and its openness is the whole point: it is left exposed as the finish, and the same open structure is what lets it absorb rather than reflect sound within a room.
It is typically seen on exposed soffits, sports and community hall linings, plant rooms, workshops and car park undercrofts, either left in its natural grey or supplied factory coloured. It takes knocks visibly, cannot be sanded or filled like a plaster surface, and painting it with a roller or brush clogs the open face, so decoration is a decision that belongs at specification rather than afterwards.
