Seamless Acoustic Plaster and Spray Systems

Describes the layered acoustic plaster build-up and explains why the visible coat cannot be repaired, filled or repainted in the way a conventional plaster finish can.

Overview

What acoustic plaster is

A seamless acoustic plaster system is a build-up rather than a plaster. An absorbent backing panel, typically a mineral or glass fibre board, is fixed to a frame or soffit; a porous coating of fine mineral granulate held in a binder is then trowelled or sprayed over it in successive layers and finished to a fine, slightly open texture that reads as a soft monolithic surface.

It is easily mistaken for the gypsum plaster and polished plaster finishes covered elsewhere in this library, and the difference is fundamental. Those are dense finishes valued for smoothness, hardness or sheen. Here the surface is deliberately open so that sound can pass through it into the board behind, and it is the entire build-up that does the work. A conventional skim over the same backing board would defeat the system completely.

That porosity governs how the finish is treated for the rest of its life. Ordinary paint closes it. Filler smeared across it closes it. Even a patch repair calls for the system's own materials and a trained applicator, and the repair often shows as a change of texture rather than of colour. It is better regarded as a specialist finish carrying a specialist maintenance route with it.

Acoustic behaviour
The absorbent element is the backing board, and the coating is the porous route to it. Nothing meaningful can be said about the finish alone, and expectations must come from an acoustic professional considering the whole build-up and the room.
Appearance
The result is a fine, faintly granular monolithic plane with no joint, module or hole. Lighting is decisive: raking light across a hand applied surface reveals undulation that flat light would hide entirely.
Surface wear
The face is soft compared with gypsum plaster. Scuffs, knocks and even firm handling leave marks, which is why the system is normally reserved for surfaces well out of reach.
Maintenance
Conventional cleaning and repainting are ruled out because both close the porous surface. What is permitted comes from the system manufacturer, and is usually limited to gentle methods and the system's own materials.
Repairability
Local repairs are possible but rarely invisible, since a hand applied texture is difficult to blend. Recording the system and applicator at handover makes a sympathetic repair much more likely.
Installation dependency
Application is a controlled specialist operation, dependent on the condition of the backing, the environment during application and the applicator's skill. It is not a finish a general plasterer should be asked to attempt.
Substrate dependency
The backing board is not interchangeable. Its type, thickness class and fixing arrangement are defined by the system, and substituting a plainer board changes the system into something else entirely.

No fire conclusion can be drawn from any part of this build-up here. Classifications and tested arrangements are matters for the manufacturer's documentation and for the relevant authority.

  • How does the finish age in terms of dust pickup and discoloration in this room?
  • Is there a realistic route to renewing the surface later if it becomes tired?

  • What cleaning is permitted, and what will definitely damage or close the surface?

  • The most common way this finish is destroyed is a routine redecoration that nobody flagged as forbidden.
  • Because there are no joints or modules, there is also no natural place to stop, so terminations must be designed deliberately.
  • Sample panels made under site lighting tell far more than a small sample viewed in a showroom.
  • The backing board does the absorbing, which means substituting it quietly turns the system into a decorative texture.
  • A single water stain on a continuous ceiling can mean recoating an entire plane rather than patching.
