Perforated Acoustic Plasterboard Panels

Overview

What perforated board is

Perforated acoustic plasterboard begins as an ordinary gypsum core with paper facings, and is then punched or routed with a repeating pattern of round holes, square holes or slots and backed on the reverse with a bonded fleece. It is supplied as flat boards, often with a plain margin along one or more edges, and is screwed to a metal or timber frame in much the same way as any other lining board.

What separates it from the plain plasterboard entry is that the pattern is fixed in the factory and the site has to work around it. Plain board can be cut anywhere and jointed anywhere. Perforated board cannot, because every cut lands somewhere within the pattern. Board layout, joint positions, the plain border at the room edge, and the way the pattern continues around downlights, sprinklers and grilles all have to be set out on a drawing before the first board is lifted into place.

The perforation is a route for sound to reach whatever sits behind the board, not a decorative finish in its own right. The fleece, the cavity depth and any material in that cavity are all part of the arrangement. That also constrains decoration: the holes must not be filled, which rules out the usual approach of skimming the whole face or rolling paint liberally across it.

  • Where regular access above the lining is needed, since this is a fixed surface rather than a demountable one.

  • In humid or wet areas, where the board type, backing and cavity all need product specific confirmation.
  • Where compartment or fire requirements apply to the lining, which belong to the tested assembly and the relevant authority.
  • Where later redecoration by ordinary painting is expected, because filling the perforations changes what the board does.
  • Where the cavity behind cannot be formed as the manufacturer's arrangement requires.

Qualitative topics worth raising. Measured values, classes and grades come from the manufacturer's technical documentation for the specific product, not from a reference page.

Installation dependency
This board is set out rather than simply fixed. Joint lines, the position of the plain margin, board direction and the pattern around every penetration are decided on a drawing, and a board cut in the wrong place cannot be corrected afterwards.
Acoustic behaviour
Perforation opens a path to the fleece and cavity behind, so any absorbent effect belongs to that whole build-up and to the room, never to the board alone. Measurable expectations are for an acoustic professional to set.
Appearance
From a distance the field reads as a lightly textured plane, and close to, the pattern geometry dominates. Alignment across joints, the width of the plain border and the treatment around lights are what make it look considered.
Repairability
Damage is harder to make good than on plain board, because a patch has to align with the pattern in both directions. Keeping offcuts and recording the board reference makes a future repair far more likely to disappear.
Maintenance
The face cannot be redecorated in the usual way. Filling holes with paint or filler closes the very route that the board exists to provide, so any decoration must follow the manufacturer's method or be avoided.
Substrate dependency
The frame behind must suit the board layout, since fixings and joints have to land on framing that itself follows the pattern set out. Frame centres and board direction are therefore decided together.
Fire-related questions
Perforated board is not a substitute for any tested lining arrangement, and nothing about fire can be inferred from a gypsum core. Requirements and classifications rest with the manufacturer's documentation and the relevant authority.

  • What humidity will the room reach, and is a moisture resisting board variant being considered?
  • Is the building dried out and stable before the boards are fixed and jointed?
  • Will the cavity behind the lining be ventilated, sealed or filled, and by whom?
  • Could condensation form on any surface within the cavity behind the perforations?
  • Is dust from the room likely to collect visibly in the perforations over time?

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • What frame is the board fixed to, and have centres been set to suit the board layout?
  • What material sits in the cavity behind, and who has specified it?
  • How deep is the cavity, and has that been coordinated with services above the lining?
  • How do the boards meet a plain plasterboard margin or an adjoining lining?
  • Where do access panels sit, and how are they framed within the pattern?

  • Which perforation pattern has been chosen, and has it been seen as a whole panel rather than a sample?
  • Does the pattern run continuously across joints, or is a plain band accepted at each junction?
  • How wide is the plain border at walls, and is it consistent all around the room?
  • How are downlights, detectors and grilles positioned relative to the pattern?
  • What decoration is intended, and does the manufacturer accept it on a perforated face?
  • Will the fleece behind be visible through the holes, and is its colour acceptable?

Questions to raise rather than a service life to expect. No material has a universal lifespan — it depends on the assembly, the exposure and the upkeep.

  • How exposed is the lining to knocks, and how does a perforated face behave when struck?
  • Are the perforated edges of the board fragile during handling and fixing?
  • Will the surface be touched or leaned on at low level, and is a plain band preferable there?
  • How well do the jointed pattern lines hold as the building moves and dries?
  • Is cracking at joints more visible on a patterned face than on a plain one?

Upkeep

Maintenance and repair considerations

  • Have offcuts and the board reference been kept so a future patch can match the pattern?
  • What does the manufacturer say about cleaning and about any decoration of the face?
  • Who will carry out repairs, and are they familiar with patterned board jointing?
  • If a section must be opened for access, how will the pattern be reinstated?
  • Is anyone likely to paint the ceiling conventionally without understanding the consequence?

Blind spots

Commonly overlooked points

  • A single coat of ordinary paint applied by a well meaning decorator can undo the reason the board was specified.
  • The pattern has to be resolved before ordering, which pulls a normally late decision to a much earlier point in the programme.
  • Cut boards at the perimeter leave part holes that look untidy unless a plain margin was planned from the start.
  • Access above a continuous perforated lining means cutting it, so access panels belong in the setting out drawing.
  • The fleece behind the holes is visible in raking light, and its colour is part of the finished appearance.
