Overview
What plasterboard is
Plasterboard is a manufactured sheet material: a set gypsum core sandwiched between paper liners, supplied in large sheets and delivered ready to fix. It is a lining, not a plaster. Where a wet plaster is mixed on site and trowelled onto a background, plasterboard arrives already flat and is fixed to a frame or bonded to masonry.
Boards are fixed in one of a few familiar ways. On timber or light-gauge steel studs they are screwed to the framing members. On masonry they are commonly bonded with adhesive dabs, which leaves a shallow void behind the board. That void matters: it changes how the wall sounds when knocked, where fixings can be made, and how services run behind the lining.
Variants exist for damp-prone rooms, for impact-prone areas and for other specific purposes, usually identifiable by core additives and liner colour. What any particular variant achieves is a matter for the manufacturer's documentation and a qualified professional, not something a reference page can state.

- Substrate dependency
- Plasterboard is only as flat as what it is fixed to. Bowed studs, out-of-line dabs or a twisted frame telegraph through the board and through every finish applied over it, so the framing is set out before boarding starts.
- Moisture behaviour
- The gypsum core and paper liners are not intended to sit wet. Where moisture is expected, board choice and the surrounding assembly should be discussed with a qualified professional rather than assumed from the category.
- Installation dependency
- Board joints, corner beads and fixing heads all have to be filled and feathered. The quality of that jointing, not the board itself, is what a decorated wall shows under raking light.
- Repairability
- Damaged areas are usually cut out and patched with new board rather than repaired in place, which is straightforward but leaves a joint that has to be feathered and blended into the surrounding finish.
- Surface wear
- Paper-faced board dents rather than chips. Corners and low-level areas take the most punishment, which is why beads, heavier skims or alternative boards are often discussed for circulation routes.
- Acoustic behaviour
- How a lined wall behaves in terms of sound is a property of the entire construction - frame, cavity, fixings and junctions - rather than of the board, and expectations should be set by a qualified professional.
- Documentation
- Board variants are not interchangeable. The manufacturer's data sheet identifies what a given board is intended for, and that documentation is worth keeping with the project record.
Exposure

- Is the room subject to steam, splashing or long periods of high humidity in normal use?
- Has the building been dried out before boarding, and what is the moisture state of the background?

- How will small dents and popped fixing heads be filled and touched in without a visible patch?
- Are offcuts of the same board being kept on site so future patches match in thickness?
- Will the decorative finish over a repair need to be taken to a natural break to avoid flashing?

- If the lining is disturbed for a new socket or pipe, how is the surrounding finish protected?
