Overview
What window board is
An internal window board is the horizontal component that caps the wall construction at the bottom of a window reveal indoors. In faced board form the core is a particle board or a fibre panel, and the face is applied in the factory, either as melamine impregnated paper fused to the surface, as a laminate bonded under pressure, or as a foil wrapped around the rounded front edge so that the visible profile is covered in one piece.
The same component is also made as a solid timber board finished with lacquer or oil, as a stone or engineered stone slab, and as a moulded composite. What these versions share is a position rather than a material, which is why the choice is usually settled by the junctions: how the board meets the frame, how the plaster or reveal lining lands on it, and what it bears on across the wall.
It should not be confused with an external sill, which sheds water away from the facade and forms part of the weather line, nor with a worktop, which is made to be worked on. The internal board is a finishing and closing component. Where a radiator sits beneath the window, the board also meets warm air rising against its underside, and its projection changes how that air moves across the glass.

- Timber boards show their grain and move with the seasons, while a faced board carries an even applied decor that repeats from length to length, which changes the character of the room.
