Overview

What stone copings and cills is

Copings and cills are shaped stone units placed at the top of a wall or beneath an opening in it. A coping caps a wall and finishes its exposed top; a cill sits under a window or door opening and finishes the wall face below it. Both are worked to a profile rather than left as plain rectangular blocks, and both exist because of water rather than because of appearance.

The governing principle is weathering. The unit is shaped so that water reaching it runs across a fall and is released clear of the wall beneath, usually with a groove worked into the underside of the projecting edge - a drip, or throating - so that water breaks away instead of tracking back to the wall face. Copings may be flat, once-weathered or twice-weathered; cills are often stooled at their ends where they meet the jambs of the opening.

They are easily lumped in with dressed-stone-blocks as ordinary masonry, but they are not interchangeable with them. A wall block is bedded within a coursed face and shares its neighbours' job. A coping or cill is a weathering component whose profile, projection, joints and everything sitting under or behind it together form a detail. That detailing is assembly design for a qualified professional, and this page deliberately specifies none of it. The units here are worked from quarried stone; the same copings and cills made as moulded cementitious units are covered by cast stone.

Weathering and exposure
These units occupy the most exposed positions on a wall, taking rain on an upper face and shedding it at an edge. Ask the supplier what is known about the specific stone in that kind of position rather than in general.
Moisture behaviour
The whole point of the unit is to move water away from the wall beneath. Whether it does so depends on the surrounding detail, so moisture behaviour here is a question about the assembly rather than about the stone.
Appearance
Profile, projection and the shadow line cast by the drip are what these units contribute visually. Flat, once-weathered and twice-weathered copings give quite different tops to the same wall.
Installation dependency
Units are heavy, worked to a profile and set to a line, and the sequence in which they are placed relative to the rest of the wall matters. All of it follows the designer's detail rather than a site convention.
Maintenance
Blocked or bridged drip grooves, vegetation on wall tops and staining below the projection are the usual things to look for. Ask who will inspect these positions and how they will be reached.
Repairability
Replacing a single unit means disturbing whatever sits under and around it, which is why the cause of a failure has to be understood first. Ask what replacement would actually involve on this wall.
Documentation
Ask for the stone name and source, drawings of the worked profile including the drip, the schedule of units and specials, and the supplier's handling guidance for heavy shaped stone.

  • Specials for corners, stops and returns are the items most likely to be missed and most likely to delay a run.

  • Staining on a wall below a coping or cill is a symptom, and replacing the stone without finding the cause repeats the problem.
