Pre Primed MDF and Softwood Moulding Stock

Overview
What primed moulding is
Primed moulding stock is machined profile material, meaning architrave, skirting, beading and panel mouldings, supplied with a factory applied sealer and primer already on the faces that will be seen. The core beneath that primer is either a wood fibre board machined to the profile, or a softwood section, often finger jointed from shorter pieces so that long straight lengths can be produced from small stock.
The primer is applied in the factory, sprayed or rollered under controlled conditions, which is why it lies more evenly than a first coat brushed on site and why the machined profile stays crisp. That is the difference from raw fibreboard or softwood sections: the surface arrives already sealed, so the number of finish coats needed changes, and so does the preparation the decorator has to do before applying them.
The limits of that primer are where the trouble lies. It covers the show faces only. The back is usually bare, every cut end is bare, and the primer is a sealer rather than a finish, so it is not meant to be left exposed for long or to meet moisture. Cut ends of a machined fibreboard section are particularly absorbent, and mitres, scribes and joints that are not sealed before fixing are where swelling and open joints later appear.
