Perforated Pegboard Storage Panel

Overview
What pegboard is
Pegboard is a panel perforated with a regular grid of round holes at a fixed spacing. The traditional version is made from hardboard, the dense wet-process fibreboard covered elsewhere in this library, so it is that same material worked into a specific perforated format rather than a different board altogether. Painted, faced and metal versions of the same format are also sold.
The holes are a fitting, not a decoration. A pegboard hook has a leg that passes through the hole and hooks back behind the board, which is why the panel has to be held clear of the wall on battens or proprietary spacers. Fixed flat against plaster there is nowhere for the hook leg to go, and the board becomes a perforated lining rather than a storage system.
Hole spacing is the other half of the specification. Accessories are made to a particular pitch and to a particular hole size, so hooks and shelf brackets bought for one board may not sit in another. What a board will hold depends on its material, its thickness and how it is supported, and those are matters for the manufacturer's documentation rather than for assumption on site.

- Installation dependency
- The spacer behind the board is what makes the system work. Battens or proprietary standoffs must give the hook legs room to turn, and the battens themselves have to be fixed to a background that can take the load.
- Substrate dependency
- The traditional board is hardboard, which is dense on one face and coarse on the back, so the fitting direction matters and the panel is not equally presentable on both sides.
- Moisture behaviour
- Fibreboard takes up moisture through the cut hole edges as well as through the faces. A damp workshop will soften and swell a plain board, and painting it does not make it waterproof.
- Appearance
- The hole grid is a strong repeating pattern and is visible whether or not it is being used. Painting changes the colour but tends to close up the hole edges as it builds.
- Surface wear
- Holes elongate over time where hooks are moved often or loaded near the limit of what the board will take, and a torn hole cannot be restored to its original shape.
- Repairability
- Damaged boards are usually replaced rather than repaired, which is straightforward provided the battens remain sound and the replacement matches the hole pitch.
- Documentation
- Hole pitch, hole size, board material and accessory compatibility are product specific, and the manufacturer's information is what tells you whether given hooks will fit.
Exposure

- Is the wall in a heated space, or in an unheated garage or shed?
- Will the board be exposed to damp air, hose water or vehicle moisture?
- Does the wall behind run cold enough for condensation to sit in the space behind the board?
- Will the board be washed down, and can a fibreboard panel take that treatment?
- Is the space ventilated so that moisture behind the board can dry out?

- Fixed flat to a wall a pegboard cannot work, because the hooks need room behind it.

- Cut hole edges are raw fibreboard and take up moisture faster than the faces do.
- The board's back face is usually coarse, so fitting it the wrong way round shows.
- Painting can partly close the holes and make the hooks a tight fit afterwards.
